Sports Report for Thursday, 2-21-2019

Local Notes: 

Laurens Academy:

  • Crusader Girls Back in Action Tonight…. The Laurens Academy Crusader basketball team will travel back down to Wilson Hall in in Sumter tonight to take on the Cathedral Academy Generals out of North Charleston in one of the semi-final games of the SCISA Class-A State Basketball Tournament starting at 6:00 pm… The Generals come into tonight’s contest with an 18-9 record and are a #1 seed like the 27-3 Crusaders… They defeated King Academy 29-20 in the first round of the playoffs and Curtis Baptist 45-34 in a quarter-final game this past Monday… They are averaging 43.4 points per game while giving up 32 points per game… Their two main offensive weapons are #11 Mia  Wysong a freshman who is averaging 12.2 points per game and #2 Madi Douglas a senior who is averaging 10.3 points per game… If you would like to see more of their team stats click here… The winner of tonight’s game will advance to the finals on Saturday at 11:00 am at the Sumter Civic Center… For those of you thinking about going down the address is: 520 Wilson Hall Rd, Sumter, SC 29150…  Good luck to the Crusaders!

College Notes:

  • Baseball Season Underway… The college baseball season opened last weekend around the country and the latest D-I Collegiate Baseball Poll came out after this past weekend’s games so let’s take a look at it… Spots 1-5 are occupied by LSU, Vanderbilt, UCLA, Texas Tech and Stanford…. Spots 6-10 are occupied by Florida, Oregon State, North Carolina, Florida State and Coastal Carolina… Clemson checks in at #15… To see the entire top 25 in the poll, click here.
  • Softball Also Underway… The college softball season has actually been underway a week longer than baseball and to give the ladies equal time (plus I like college softball) let’s review the latest Softball America Poll… Florida State holds down the #1 spot followed by UCLA, Florida, Oklahoma and Washington rounding out the top 5… Alabama, Georgia, Texas, Tennessee and Louisiana are in spots 6-10… South Carolina checks in at 15… Clemson does not have a team that competes on the NCAA D-I level but will next year I believe… To see the entire top 25 in this poll, click here.
  • Clemson… The #15 Tigers are 3-1 on the season and will be hosting VMI starting tomorrow at 4:00 pm in the first game of a 3-game series weather permitting…. To see the Clemson season schedule, click here.
  • South Carolina… The Gamecocks are also 3-1 on the young season and had their game with PC canceled last night due to the weather… They are scheduled to start a 3-game series with Utah Valley in Columbia starting tomorrow at 4:00 pm….To see the South Carolina season schedule, click here.
  • PC… The PC baseball team is 1-2 on the season as they won a game down at Alabama last weekend… They are scheduled to start their first home series tomorrow as 2:00 pm against Marist… To see eh PC baseball schedule, click here.
