Swimmer Rescued from Shore of Lake Greenwood

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and Laurens County Sheriff’s Office officials said a man has been hospitalized for possible hypothermia after he reportedly tried to swim to a friend’s home but ended up in a cove on Lake Greenwood on Tuesday morning.  According to WSPA-TV news, Laurens County Capt. Chris Martin said the Sheriff’s Office had an encounter with the man around midnight on Tuesday, after neighbors said he was wandering around. Deputies responded to the area and took him back to his home. Martin told News 7 that around 4:00 yesterday morning the man called 911 to say he was lost.

Deputies said the man then decided to swim to a friend’s home but couldn’t make it and ended up in the cove.

DNR spokesperson Capt. Robert McCullough told News 7 their crews were called in around 6 a.m. yesterday to assist Laurens County retrieve a man who was sitting on the bank of the cove. DNR reportedly picked up a Laurens County Deputy in the DNR boat, then picked up the man.

EMS crews took the man to an area hospital for treatment of possible hypothermia.
