Sports Report for Thursday, 4-18-2019

Local Notes:

CHS Red Devils:

  • Baseball: Greenwood 5 – Clinton 4… The Red Devil baseball team finished out its regular season last night as they traveled to Greenwood HS to take on the Eagles in a non-region game… The Red Devils outhit the Eagles 11-9 and even scored first in the game but the Eagles still managed to escape with a 5-4 win… The Red Devils did get on the board 1st inning when Caleb Riddle singled and later came home an Eagle error… The Eagles did not score until the 3rd inning when they used 4 singles and a sacrifice fly to produce 3 runs…They added another run in the 4th inning before Clinton added 2 more runs in the top of the 5th inning on a couple of hits, a fielder’s choice or two and an Eagle error… The Eagles got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning on a solo homer to make it 5-3… The Red Devils tried to rally in the 7th inning when they scored one run and had the tying run thrown out at the plate after base hit on a perfect throw from the Eagles left fielder… Griffin Fuller led the Red Devils at the plate going 2 for 4 with a double… For the game’s box score and some stats, click on the following: 4-17-19-CBB-Greenwood… For the games scorecard, click on the following: 4-17-19-CBB-Greenwood-SC
  • Red Devils Baseball Eliminated From Playoffs… Last night there was another region game that was of great interest to Red Devil fans… The Woodruff Wolverines traveled down to Prosperity to take on the Mid-Carolina Rebels… The reason that the Red Devils were keeping an eye on the game is simple…. If the Rebels win the Red Devils make the playoffs… If the Wolverines win, Clinton is out of the playoffs… Well unfortunately I have to report that Woodruff took a 4-2 win over the Rebels thus eliminating the Red Devils from the playoffs… As Coach Fortman commented about the Greenwood game and the Woodruff win afterwards, “Kind of sums up our season, just short”.

LDHS: Raiders:

  • Baseball: Laurens 4 – Ninety Six 3… The Raider varsity baseball team stepped out of region play as they hosted the Wildcats of Ninety Six at Ed Prescott Field… The Wildcats came into last night’s game with a 13-7 season record and finished first in their region with a 9-1 record but the Raiders prevailed by a score of 4-3… The Raiders scored first in the 2nd inning when reached on a fielder’s choice and then scored on and eventually advanced and scored on 3 wild pitches… In the top of the 3rd inning the Wildcats scored all 3 of their runs which were all unearned due to Raider errors…  The Raiders got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning when Tanner Smith singled and was later driven in by a double off the bat of Jalen Bragg… The Raiders scored the winning runs in the 5th inning on a couple of hits (including an RBI single by Luke Willis) and a couple of Wildcat errors…. The Raiders had 9 hits in the game to the Wildcats 5 with Luke Willis going 3 for 3 to lead the Raiders at the plate…  Eric Jones picked up the win for the Raiders pitching 5⅔ innings with Tanner Smith picking up a save… For the game’s box score and some stats, click on the following: 4-17-19-LBB-NinetySix… For the games scorecard, click on the following: 4-17-19-LBB-NinetySix-SC… The Raiders close out their season tonight on the road taking on the Ealey Green Wave… The game will have a huge bearing on the Raiders playoff position…. If you can, go up and cheer the Raiders on.
