Sports Report for Monday, 5-13-2019

Local Notes:

CHS Red Devils:

  • Tennis: Bishop England 5 – Clinton 1… For the third year in a row the Red Devil boys’ tennis team traveled down to the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center to compete for the Class-AAA Tennis Championship…  For the second year in a row their opponent was the Battling Bishops of Bishop England HS out of the Charleston area… As you may or may not recall the Bishops were also the Red Devils opponents in last year’s final and the Bishops took a 6-0 last year… Well the Bishops were again a strong team as they entered Saturday’s match with a 16-1 record while Clinton entered with a 14-3 record… I have to report that Bishop England once again took the championship as they defeated the Red Devils 5-1… In doubles action Eli Brewer and Hayden Stinson lost to opponents 0-6 & 0-6… Four of the 5 singles matches went much the same way as Connor Donley, and Hayden Miner lost to their opponents by the same 0-6 & 0-6 score… Anders Orr also lost 1-6 & 06…. The bright spot of the day for the Red Devils came in the #1 singles play where Ike Waldron defeated his opponent Zach Dacuba 6-4 and 7-6 by taking the second set tiebreaker 7-2 in a marathon match that lasted long  after all other matches were complete… Congratulations to Coach Simmons and the team on a great season! One suggestion though, if you find yourselves in the same spot next season playing Bishop England again for the title, get a Catholic priest to come along and do an exorcism….LOL      To see a short slide show of photos taken at the match, click here.

  • Red Devils Do Well at State Track Meet… Over the weekend members of the Red Devils girls track team participated in the Class-AAA state track met at Spring Valley HS… Keira Dendy brought home the gold in the shot put finishing first with a shot of 37 feet, 11.5 inches …. Last year the 4×100 meter relay team won the state but this year they had to settle for second finishing .49 seconds behind the first place Manning… The team was made up of Patients Adams, Maya Smith, Aaliyah Johnson and Quiana Suber… Maya Smith also finished 5th in the 100 and 200 meter dashes… Deasia Boyd was 7th in the 800 meter run and Mia Smith 7th in the 400 meter hurdles… As a team the Red Devils finished 8th with 33 points… Bishop England won with 73 points… Congratulations to all these Red Devils!

  • Golf Team Headed to State Meet Today and Tomorrow… I want to take a moment to wish the Red Devil golf team good luck as they travel to Camden today and tomorrow to participate in the Class AAA State Championship… This I the first time in school history that the Red Devils as a team have qualified for eh for the finals as a team… The team is made up of Phoebe Carlos, Sofia Carlos, Zoey Carlos, Javi Carlos and Matthew McKittrick and their coach is Andrew Campbell… Go Big Red!

LDHS: Raiders:

  • Price Finishes Second at State Meet… The Laurens Raiders only had one member of the boys track team to qualify for the state meet over the weekend… That Raider was Evan Price who participated in the 3200 meter run… Evan represented the Raiders well as he finished second in the event with a time of 9:47:43… The winner was from Cane Bay HS who finished a little over 6 seconds ahead of Evan… Congratulations to Evan!

Braves… The Braves have been out in Arizona this past weekend completing a 4-game series with the D-backs… As you may recall they lost game one of the series on Thursday by a score of 3-2.

  • Friday: Braves 2 – D-backs 1The game was tied 1-1 going into the top of the 8th inning when Ronald Acuna Jr. stepped to the plate with 2 out and blasted a monster solo homer high off the centerfield wall to score what would prove to be the winning run for the Braves as they took a 2-1 win… There were only 11 hits in the game and the Braves had 7 of them.
  • Saturday: Braves 6 – D-backs 4… Then on Saturday the Braves used a pair of homeruns one by Brian McCann in the 7th inning and another by Johan Camargo to power themselves to a 6-4 win over the D-Backs… They got a great start out of Kevin Gausman who pitched 6 strong innings and the bullpen was then able to hold the D-backs at bay.
  • Sunday: Braves 5 – D-backs 3… The Braves were able to take the series finale yesterday as the Braves won 5-3 thus taking the series 3 games to 1… The D-backs actually outhit the Braves 14-12 but the Braves were able to get some key outs with the bases loaded and some timely hitting.
  • Next For The Braves… The Braves are now 21-20 on the season and have the night off tonight before they start a 3-game series with the Cardinals at Sun Trust Park tomorrow night.

Drive… The Greenville Drive finished a 3-games series with the Rome Braves in Georgia on Fridy and then traveled to Ashville to start a 3-game series with the Tourist on Saturday.

  • Friday: Rome-10 – Drive 3… The Drive closed out their series with the Rome Braves on Friday losing to the Baby Braves by a score of 10-3… The Drive actually outhit the Braves 10-8 but 3 Drive errors aided the Braves cause…. The Drive lost the series 2-1.
  • Saturday: Drive 9 – Tourist 8… The Drive opened their series with the Tourist in Ashville on Saturday night on a positive note as they took a 9-8 win over the Tourist… The Drive used a 3-run 8th inning to get the lead and then never gave it up.
  • Sunday: Tourist 4 – Drive 2… Yesterday the Tourist rebounded from their loss on Saturday to take a 4-2 win over the Drive… The Tourist simply got the clutch hit when needed despite the Drive outhitting them 7-4.
