Community Garden at Sanders

Plans for a community garden were boosted with a $3,000 grant recently announced for Sanders Middle School. Principal Dr. Lacresha Byrd said the $3,000 grant was a ‘Lowe’s Toolbox for Education Grant’ for Sanders’ project, ‘Planting Seeds / Growing a Community.” She said the grant application was based on a goal of enhancing the hands-on learning opportunities and building a community space for positive collaboration at Sander Middle school. Dr. Byrd added, “We look forward to sharing the project with the Sanders Middle School Community.”

Principal Byrd said they began talking about the project after reading a book, Seedfolks, earlier this semester, where students discussed how the transformation of an inner-city lot to a community garden positively influenced an environment and community. Dr. Byrd said that Sanders’ Instructional Coach, Dr. Paketrice Jones, took it upon herself to write this grant and it was approved. Dr. Byrd added, “It has been exciting to talk about starting a garden within our community, and now we have the funding to support it!” She thanked Lowe’s for generously supporting the project.
