Sports Report for Wednesday, 5-15-2019

Local Notes:  See the This and That section below.

College Notes:

  • D-I Baseball Rankings… Looking at the national College Baseball Writers Association poll for this week which came out on Monday the top 3 teams remained unchanged… UCLA, Vanderbilt and Stanford hold down the top 3 spots in that order… There was some shakeup below that as Mississippi State jumped from #6 to #4 and Arkansas remained at #5… East Carolina checks in at #6 up from #8 and Georgia Tech jumped from 10th to #7… Texas Tech, Georgia and Louisville round out the top 10… If you would like to see the entire top 30 in the poll, click here… The site the link will carry you to also has information about other schools that received votes and a breakdown by conference as to how many teams from each conference made the top 30 in the poll.
  • D-II Baseball Rankings & Regionals… In the NCAA Division II they do rankings a little different in that instead of having one over all national ranking they do it by regions… In the Southeast Region two are teams hold down the #1 and #2 rankings… The North Greenville Crusaders are ranked #1 in the region with a 40-9 record when the last rankings were done and the Newberry Wolves were #2 with a record of 41-14… If you would like to see the entire standings for each region in D-II, click here…. Now that being said the playoff system is similar but not exactly like the D-I College World Series setup… Both North Greenville and Newberry will be hosting a part of the Southeast regionals starting later this week… If you are an interest in seeing the regional brackets for D-II click here… This link will carry you to the NCAA website where all the regionals are listed in a multipage document… You will have to scroll down to pages 11 & 12 to find the Crusaders and Wolves regional.

Pro Sports    For more information on any of the following games, click on their score.

  • Cardinals 14 – Braves 3… The Braves returned home to Sun Trust Park last night after a long road trip to open a 3-game series with the St. Louis Cardinals… Someone must have forgotten to take the Braves bats and pitching off the plane as the Braves lost to the Cardinals 14-3… Four Brave pitchers gave up 14 hits (4 of which were homers) while the Braves managed just 3 hits
  • Hickory 4 – Greenville 3 (12)The Drive also returned home to start a series with the Hickory Crawdads and the fans who went got to see some “free baseball” as the game went 12 innings the only problem was Hickory won the game 4-3… The game was scoreless through 9 innings and Hickory put 2 runs on the board in the 12th inning to go up 4-2 and the Drive could punch in a single run in the bottom of the inning.

While at camp, your son/daughter will learn basic baseball fundamentals; including base running, hitting, catching, throwing, and specific position fundamentals. Our goal for this camp is to serve youth baseball players in our county that want to become better players. We feel like it is our duty to give back to the community that has grown and shaped so many of our Raider Baseball players, past and present. We look forward to working with our youth and hope to see all of you on June 24th. Registrations will take place every morning beginning at 8am. Snacks and water will be provided. Players should wear proper baseball attire every day; baseball pants, hat, and cleats. If a player does not have appropriate baseball attire, please have them dress in clothes that they can get dirty in and tennis shoes. The cost is $45 per player / $55 for Siblings. A Google Form link is provided below if your children plan to attend, in order for us to get a head count… For more information or if you have questions contact Coach Patterson by email at kjpatterson@laurens55.org.     Click on following to register: LINK: Baseball Camp
