Sports Report for Tuesday, 5-21-2019

Baseball…. As you may recall, the Blue Hose baseball team started their final series of the regular season last Thursday with a 10-5 loss to Charleston Southern down in the North Charleston area.

  • Friday: PC 6 – CSU 4… The Blue Hose baseball team rebounded on Friday and took a 6-4 win over the Buccaneers as Jackson Dean picked up his second complete game win in the last 3 weeks… The Blue Hose were trailing 3-0 going into the top of the third inning when they scored 4 runs and added 2 more in the fourth inning and went on to take the win.
  • Saturday: PC 15 – CSU 6… In their final game of the regular season and the rubber game of the three-game series with the Bucs, the Blue Hose took a one-sided 15-6 win over CSU… A six-run second inning was the key to PC getting ahead and staying there the rest of the game… Four homeruns by the Blue Hose also helped out… The Blue Hose end their regular season with a 29-27 overall record and 16-11 in Big South play which sets the record for the most wins in conference play for PC.
  • Big South Baseball Tournament….Now with the regular season over, Campbell drew the #1 seed with a 19-7 record… Radford is seeded #2, Winthrop #3 (18-9 and PC #4 (16-11)… The Big South Tournament will start today up at SEGRA Stadium in Fayetteville, NC… PC will not see action in the double- elimination tournament until tomorrow when they take on the #5 seeded Running Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb… That game will start about 4:00 pm… Now for more information on PC’s participation in the tournament from PC’s website click here… Now the Big South Conference also has a lot about the tournament on its website including the bracket, how to watch the games live and much more… If you would like to see all that information, click here… Good luck to the Blue Hose!


Local Notes:  


  • Winter and Spring Sports banquet Tonight… Tonight in the gymnasium at CHS starting at 5:30 CHS will be holding their winter and Spring Athletics Awards ceremony… Similar to last year it will be done in two “shifts” with a 30 minute intermission between the “shifts” for refreshments… Now if you click here it will take you to a posting on the CHS athletic website where there is more information about this including which sports will be honored in each of the two “shifts”… Student-athletes will be admitted free but there is a $2 admission for all others.



  • Spring Game TonightThe Laurens Raider football team will be closing out their spring practice with the Spring Game at KC Hanna Stadium starting at 7:00 pm… The Raiders have been working hard and are looking forward to “putting it altogether” tonight… Prior to that the junior girls will be taking on the senior girls in a Powder Puff Flagg Football Game starting at 6:00 pm…. The Raider Booster Club will be selling Raider gear and the concession stand will be open… Make plans to come on out and support the Raiders.


  • Softball Team Holds Award Banquet… last night the Raider softball program held its annual Awards Banquet and numerous awards were handed out as team members, families and friend gathered for a meal… All-Laurens County Team, All-Region Awards, Team Awards and some more humorous awards were handed out along with letters and pins… Those who made the All-Laurens County Team are Trinity Daniels, Vanessa Harshaw, Rachel Delio, Kauree Munyan and Cassidy Plaia who was named the Laurens County Player of the Year… Those who were named to the Region I-AAAAA All-Region Team are Trinity Daniels, Rachel Delio, Vanessa Harshaw, Cassidy Plaia, and Michaela Smith…. Cassidy Plaia was also named to the All-State / All-Star Team… The Team Awards were as follows: Leadership- Vanessa Harshaw… Team Spirit – Trinity Daniels… Offensive Player of the Year – Cassidy Plaia… Defensive Player of the Year – Michaela Smith… To see a slide show of photos made at the ceremony, click here….  Congratulations to all these fine young ladies!


College Notes: In addition to the Big South Conference Baseball Tournament starting today some other area conferences are starting their baseball tournaments today.

  • ACC… The ACC Baseball Tournament starts today up Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, NC… Louisville (43-12 / 21-9) earned the #1 seed and will head up Pool A and Clemson (#8) and Boston College (#12)…. Poll B is composed of #2 Georgia Tech, Duke (#7) and Notre Dame (#11)… Pool C is composed of #3 NC State, Florida State (#3) and Wake Forest (#10)… And finally in Pool D you will find #4 Miami, North Carolina (#5) and Virginia (#9)… Now for you Tiger fans Clemson will be in action today as they are in the first game of the tournament at 11:00 am taking on Boston College… Now for more information about the tournament including the full schedule, background on the tournament and viewing information, click here.
  • SEC… The SEC Tournament also kicks off today out in Hoover, AL… Games that are being played today are single elimination with the winner advancing to the double-elimination portion of the tournament tomorrow and the loser going right back home… The South Carolina Gamecocks find themselves in that situation as they will face LSU in the last game tonight about 9:00 pm or maybe a little earlier… To see more information about the tournament including the full schedule click here… If you would like to see just the interactive bracket, click here.
  • Southern Conference… The Southern Conference Baseball Tournament starts today at Flor Field in Greenville… They have one “play-in” game today as Western Carolina and The Citadel face off at 10:00 am this morning… The winner advances to the rest of the double-elimination tournament starting tomorrow…If you would like more information about this tournament and its bracket, click here.

  • Braves 4 – Giants 1… The Braves started a 4-game series with the Giants out on the west coast on a positive note last night as they won 4-1… Braves starter Mike Soroka went 8 strong innings giving up just 2 hits and 1 earned run while Ronald Acuna had 2 homers for the Braves and Austin Riley had 1 homer himself.
  • Drive 4 – Power 0… The Greenville Drive finished their 4-game series with the West Virginia Power last night on a high note as they took a 4-0 win… They put 3 runs on the board in the third inning and were never really threatened as the Power could only manage to get 6 scattered hits while the Drive got their 4 runs on 8 timely hits… The Drive now start a road trip with the first stop being down in the capital city taking on the Columbia Fireflies.

Raider Volleyball… The Raider volleyball team started spring practice yesterday… Coach Erin Lake would like for any young lady who is in the 7th – 12th grade next year and is interested in joining the Raiders to contact her… If you click here it will carry you to the LDHS Athletic Site where there is a posting about this and a link to a form you can fill out and submit online to contact Coach Lake about your interest in Raider volleyball.


Raider Girls Golf… The LDHS Lady Raider golf team will begin spring practice on Monday, May 6 2019. Practice will be from 4:30 PM until 6:30 PM at Lakeside Country Club on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday until May 30. No golf experience is necessary but proper golf attire is required… Any girl who lives in District 55 and is a rising seventh grader (current 6th grader) or above may play for the team… There are will be no try-outs or cuts to form the team… If you have any further question please contact Head Coach, Jim Iacuone at or (864)681-3630.


LDHS to Host Sports Physical Night…. On Wednesday, May 22 from 5:50 to 7:30 pm at LDHS Student-Athletes in Laurens School District 55 who need to get a physical for the 2019-2020 sports seasons will have the opportunity to do so at LDHS… The cost will be only $20 and you must sign up for the physical ahead of time and have ALL paperwork completed before you can see the doctor-No Exceptions… Now for more about this including link to the sign up for the physicals which can be done on-line and the form that need to be completed, click here…. Parents if you have a son or daughter who plans on playing any sport on the middle school or high school level don’t let this opportunity to get your physical pass you by.


Raider Baseball Camp

The Raider Baseball Program will be hosting a 4-day camp, June 24th-27th. This camp is offered to young boys and girls, ages 7-12. While at camp, your son/daughter will learn basic baseball fundamentals; including base running, hitting, catching, throwing, and specific position fundamentals. Our goal for this camp is to serve youth baseball players in our county that want to become better players. We feel like it is our duty to give back to the community that has grown and shaped so many of our Raider Baseball players, past and present. We look forward to working with our youth and hope to see all of you on June 24th. Registrations will take place every morning beginning at 8am. Snacks and water will be provided. Players should wear proper baseball attire every day; baseball pants, hat, and cleats. If a player does not have appropriate baseball attire, please have them dress in clothes that they can get dirty in and tennis shoes. The cost is $45 per player / $55 for Siblings.
