Sports Report for Monday, 6-3-2019

Local Notes:  


  • Spring Game… On Friday I reported about the Spring Game held at CHS on Thursday evening and said I would post up a short video interview with Coach Fountain and some photos shat at the game… Well technical problems delayed that until late Friday so if you still would like to see them click here.
  • Red Devils Now in Need of New Baseball Coach… According to other media sources, Clinton baseball coach Tom Fortman is stepping down to accept an assistant principal’s position at Chester HS… I’ll try to contact Coach Fortman today for a follow-up on this.

Clemson Baseball Wins 1 and Loses 2 in Regional… The Clemson Tigers participated in the Regional being hosted by Ole Miss over the weekend in Oxford, Mississippi.

  • Friday: Clemson 8 – Illinois 4… On Friday the Tigers fell behind early but rallied to take an 8-4 win over the Fighting Illini… Kyle Wilkie had a career-high 4 hits to lead the Tigers 12 hit attack.
  • Saturday: Ole Miss 6 – Clemson 1… Then on Saturday the Tigers took on the host Rebels of Mississippi…. The Rebels started freshman lefthander Doug Nikhazy who went 8 innings and gave up only 4 hits and 1 run while the Rebels scored 6 runs on 11 hits to take a 6-1 win and drop the Tigers into the losers’ bracket.
  • Sunday: Jacksonville State 9 – Clemson 2… Yesterday the Tigers knew that in order to stay alive in the regional they would have win two games and then paly a winner take all game today to make it out of the regional… Their first task was to get by the Gamecocks of Jacksonville State…. Jacksonville scored first putting 4 runs on the board in the top of the second inning and would never trail…. The Tigers were able to get 2 of the runs back in the bottom of the second but after that Jacksonville pulled away to a 9-2 win ending the Tigers season… The Tigers finish the season with a 35-26 record


Regional Results… By the way Mississippi took a 19-4 win over Jacksonville later last night to win their regional… The only other team from the state Coastal Carolina was also eliminated yesterday… Now if you want to see which teams have already clinched their regional and advanced to a super-regional click here to go to the NCAA website where you will find an interactive bracket for the entire playoffs


Softball CWS Finals Set… Now for the college softball fans out there, I’ll tell you that UCLA and Oklahoma are the last 2 teams standing and they will start the best 2 out of 3 series today for the championship… To see how they got to this point click here to go to the interactive softball bracket on the NCAA website.

Braves… The Braves played a three game series with the Detroit Tigers in Atlanta over the weekend.

  • Friday: Tigers 8 – Braves 2… The Tigers’ bats were hot last Friday as they pounded out 11 hits (4 of which were homers) to the Braves 7 as they took an 8-2 win over the Braves… The Tigers Niko Goodrum went 5-5 with 2 homeruns to lead the Tigers.
  • Saturday: Braves 10 – Tigers 5…       Now there is better news for Braves fans as the Braves rebounded on Saturday to take a 10-5 win over the Tigers… Both teams had 11 hits but this time it was the Braves who played long-ball as 3 of their hits were homers…. Freddie freeman (14), Dansby Swanson and rookie phenom Austin Riley also picked up his 8th homer of the season.
  • Sunday: Braves 7 – Tigers 3… The Braves took a 3-0 lead going into the top of the 8th inning when the Tigers put 3 on the board to tie the game… The Braves came right back in the bottom of the inning and put 4 runs on the board and then held the Tigers scoreless in the top of the 9th to take a 7-3 win… The Tigers actually outhit the Braves 9-7 and out-homered the Braves 3-1 with Dansby Swanson getting his 12th homerun of the season…
  • Up Next for the Braves… The Braves will have the day off today and start a 6-game road trip tomorrow night up it Pittsburg taking on the Pirates.


Drive… The Greenville Drive finished their series 4-game series with the Delmarva Shorebirds at Flour Field over the weekend… As you may recall they lost the first game on Thursday by a score of 10-2.

  • Friday: Drive 3 – Shorebirds 2… On Friday the Shorebirds again outhit the Drive this time 6-3 but that is not what counts as the Drive got their hits in a timelier manner as the Drive took a 3-2 win.
  • Saturday: Shorebirds 5 – Drive 3… On Saturday the Drive led early but could not hold it as the Shorebirds came back to take a 5-3 win over the Drive.
  • Sunday: Drive 4 – Shorebirds 3 (10)Yesterday the drive avoided being swept by the Shorebirds as thy took a 4-3 win in 10 innings despite being outhit by the Shorebird 11-9.
  • Up Next for the Drive… The Drive will remain at home for a 3-game series with the Lexington Legends starting tonight at 7:05 pm.


NBA: Warriors 109 – Raptors 104… In case you missed it last night, the Golden State Warriors rallied for a 109-104 win over the Toronto raptors in Toronto to tie the finals at 1-1… The series now moves to Golden State for the next game on Wednesday.

Raider Youth Football Camp… Join the Laurens football coaching staff and players for their youth football camp Friday, June 7, 2019, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Laurens District High School… This football camp offers an experience designed to teach players the fundamentals and techniques of football. Techniques and drills will improve speed, agility, strength, catching, and throwing…  The camp is only $20 and will be under the direction of Coach Liner and his staff…To learn more about this camp including what to bring and who to contact if you have more questions, go to the registration form by clicking here… Go Raiders!


Raider Baseball Camp

The Raider Baseball Program will be hosting a 4-day camp, June 24th-27th. This camp is offered to young boys and girls, ages 7-12. While at camp, your son/daughter will learn basic baseball fundamentals; including base running, hitting, catching, throwing, and specific position fundamentals. Our goal for this camp is to serve youth baseball players in our county that want to become better players. We feel like it is our duty to give back to the community that has grown and shaped so many of our Raider Baseball players, past and present. We look forward to working with our youth and hope to see all of you on June 24th. Registrations will take place every morning beginning at 8am. Snacks and water will be provided. Players should wear proper baseball attire every day; baseball pants, hat, and cleats. If a player does not have appropriate baseball attire, please have them dress in clothes that they can get dirty in and tennis shoes. The cost is $45 per player / $55 for Siblings.  Raider Youth Softball Camp… Starting June 10th and running through August 26th Coach Michaela Smith will be offering a FREE softball camp on Mondays for young ladies in grades 1-6…. There is no registration required and all you need to bring is your glove… Again the clinic is free and it is on Mondays at the LDHS softball field or adjacent hitting building… If you have any questions email Coach Smith at:
