Silver Lining to the Cloud

News of fatal wrecks is not good news, but we do see a silver lining for this year’s highway fatality statistics. Laurens County is well below our number of fatalities for the past two years. As of midnight Sunday night, we were holding with 7 traffic deaths for the year in Laurens County. That’s less than half the 16 this date last year, and even further behind the 19 highway deaths the same date in 2017.

In a weekly update noting the 7 deaths here, the State Public Safety Department noted statewide fatalities were down from 443 deaths in 2018 to 397 for this year, as of June 9th. This year’s 397 traffic deaths across the state included 270 vehicle occupants, 70 pedestrians, 33 motorcyclists and 11 bicyclists. Pedestrian deaths were up slightly and bicycle deaths up from 7 to this year’s 11, but motorcycle fatalities dropped from 50 last year to 33 as of June 9th here in 2019.
