Traffic Fatalities Holding at 7

Laurens County continues to have fewer traffic fatalities than recent years. The South Carolina Department of Public Safety’s weekly update, released yesterday, is still showing 7 traffic fatalities through another week of 2019. On the same date, Laurens County had 19 highway deaths last year and 20 deaths in 2017.

Greenwood County is also improved, down from 9 traffic fatalities to 4 as of June 23rd of 2019. Newberry’s fatalities are reduced 50%, from 6 in 2018 to 3 roadway deaths in 2019. Abbeville County is down from 2 deaths to 1, while Anderson County’s traffic deaths have dropped from 38 to 25 for this year.

Greenville and Union Counties have an increase in traffic deaths. Greenville is up from 31 in 2018 to 36 here in 2019. Greenville has the large number of traffic deaths of any county in the state. Union County is up from 0 deaths in 2018 to 5 fatalities as of June 23rd, 2019.

Statewide, traffic fatalities are down from 494 deaths last year to 438.

This includes 292 in vehicles where seat belts were available, 81 pedestrians, 39 motorcyclists and 13 people on bicycles.
