Women’s World Cup Soccer:

  • USA 2 – Netherlands 0… Yesterday in the finals of the Women’s World Cup Soccer Tournament team USA took a 2-0 win to claim their fourth Women’s World Cup Soccer Championship and for the first time in history took back-to-back titles… USA was held scoreless in the first half but scored at the 61 minute mark on a penalty kick by Megan Rapinoe and again at the 69 minute mark when Rosa Lavelle found the back of the net getting a shot off between two defenders and past the outstretched hand of the goalie…. Braves… The Braves hosted the Marlins over the weekend in their last series before the All-Star Break.

  • Friday: Braves 1 – Marlins 0… The Braves and the Marlins had to endure a rain delay of about 2.5 hours before they finally finished the game early on Saturday morning but it did get finished and the Braves came out on top with a 1-0 win… The Braves scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the 9th inning when Brian McCann singled driving in Freddie Freeman from third for the walk-off win.
  • Saturday: Marlins 5 – Braves 4…       Later on Saturday the Braves carried a 4-2 lead into the top of the 5th inning where the Marlins put 3 runs on the board and then went on to take a 5-4 win over the Braves… The Marlins outhit the Braves 15-9 and bath teams had a pair of homeruns… Ronald Acuna Jr. (21) had a leadoff solo homer for the Braves in the first inning and Austin Riley (16) also had a solo homer in the second inning.
  • Sunday: Braves 4 – Marlins 3… Yesterday the Braves took the series win by taking a 4-3 win over the Marlins… The play of the game came not on offense but on defense as the Marlins loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the 9th inning… Charlie Culbertson has come into the game defensively at the begging of the 9th inning and he caught a line drive off the bat of the marlins Neil Walker for the first out and then fired a strike to home plate to nail the Marlins runner attempting to score from third for the second out (which was upheld on review) and then two batters later the Braves recorded the third out for the win… Both teams had 9 hits each and Nick Markakis led the Braves going 3 for 4 and Josh Donaldson went 2 for 4 with a double and a two-run homer…. The Braves now have 4 days off as the All-Star Game is tomorrow in Cleveland.

  

Drive… The Greenville Drive finished their 4-game home series with the Charleston RiverDogs over the weekend… As you may recall they started the series on Thursday night with an 8-7 loss to the RiverDogs…

  • Friday: Drive 4 – RiverDogs 0… Friday night the Drive rebounded to take a 4-0 win over the RiverDogs outhitting Charleston 6-4… The big difference in the game is that 2 of the Drives hit were homers as Tristan Casa (15) and Devlin Granberg (7) each had solo homers in the sixth inning for the Drive.
  • Saturday: RiverDogs 7 – Drive 1… On Saturday the Drive got on the board first scoring a single run in the bottom of the first inning but after that is was all RiverDogs as Charleston took a 7-1 win over the Drive… They simply outhit the Drive 10-7 and one of their 10 hits was a homer.
  • Sunday: Drive: 5 – RiverDogs 2… In the series finale yesterday, the RiverDogs outhit the Drive 8-2 but that is not what counts in the record books as the Drive actually took a 5-2 win…. The two Drive hits came at the perfect time as a bases loaded double in the sixth inning by Tyler Esplin drove in 3 runs and Devin Granberg singled in the eighth inning driving in the other 2 Drive runs… The Drive will take tonight off travel up to Ashville tomorrow to start a 3-game series with the Tourist.

This & That:

All-Sports Camp at Laurens Academy… Laurens Academy will be hosting an All-Sports Camp next week (July 8-12) for youth in grades 3-6… The cost is $90 and you register Monday out at Laurens Academy where the camps start at 9:00 am and run until noon… Snacks and a T-shirt are included in the price… Boys Camp… Football (Monday & Tuesday), basketball (Wednesday and Thursday) and baseball on Friday… Girls Camp… Volleyball (Monday and Tuesday), basketball (Wednesday and Thursday) and Softball on Friday

  

LDHS Youth Cheerleading Camp… On Thursday, July 11th the Laurens raider JV and Varsity cheerleaders will be holding a one-day camp from 9:00 am until noon in the auxiliary gym at LDHS… The camp is for ages 4-12 and they will be working on a cheerleading routine to present at the Clinton vs. Laurens game on August 30th… For more information about this camp click here and/or email Ashley Hall at ahall@laurens55.org… To get a copy of the registration form click here.

 

 Raider Youth Softball Camp… Starting June 10th and running through August 26th Coach Michaela Smith will be offering a FREE softball camp on Mondays for young ladies in grades 1-6…. There is no registration required and all you need to bring is your glove… Again the clinic is free and it is on Mondays at the LDHS softball field or adjacent hitting building from 7:00 pm until 8:00 pm… If you have any questions email Coach Smith at: mesmith@laurens55.org

 

Clinton YMCA Summer Sports Camps, Swimming Lessons and Pool Schedule… The Clinton YMCA has a full summer of sports camps scheduled and again this summer they will be offering swimming lessons just about every week…. Laurens YMCA Summer Sports and Specialty Camps … Starting July 1st, the Laurens family YMCA will be having several sports and specialty camps… All camps cost $50 for YMCA members and $60 for non-members….
