Sports Report for Monday, 7-22-2019

Local Notes:

  • L3 (12U) 3 – Tega Cay-Fort Mill 0… The Laurens Little League (L3) Majors All-Star Team started their participation in the state tournament down in Summerville on Saturday… The tournament actually started Friday night but L3 had a bye and started Saturday morning taking on a team from Tega Cay-Fort Mill… Good news for Laurens fans as they took a 3-0 win over Tega Cay-Fort Mill to remain in the winner’s bracket of the double elimination tournament… Sorry but I don’t have any scoring details but if I get them I will pass them along to you… Laurens was idle yesterday but returns to action today as they take on the only other unbeaten team in the tournament Northwood which defeated Summerville 13-1 on Saturday… The first pitch is scheduled for 6:00 pm and if you want to see the entire tournament bracket or the address for the park in case you want to go, click here.

Braves… The Braves completed their 4 game series with the Washington Nationals in Atlanta over the weekend… As you may recall the Braves lost the series opener on Thursday night by a score of 13-4.

  • Friday: Braves 5 – Nationals 4… On Friday the Braves carried a 3-1 lead into the top of the 9th inning where the Nationals tied the game on a 2-run homer by Victor Robies… The Braves then loaded the bases with a walk to Ronald Acuna Jr., a single by Dansby Swanson and a walk to Freddie Freeman… That set the stage for Josh Donaldson who with a 2-0 count singled to center field scoring Acuna for a walk-off win.
  • Saturday: Nationals 5 – Braves 3… On Saturday the Braves took an early 1-0 lead plating a run in the bottom of the 1st inning but the Nationals tied it with a run in in the 4th inning and then jumped ahead scoring 3 runs in the 5th inning as they went on to take a 5-3 win over the Braves… The Braves did tie the game with a pair of runs in the 6th inning off the bat of Brian McCann as he had a 2-run homer (9) … The Nationals plated the winning run in the 9th inning and then set the Braves down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning.
  • Sunday: Braves 7 – Nationals 1… Yesterday the Braves bounced back and took a 7-1 win over the Nationals to earn a 2-2 split of the 4-game series… The Braves scored 2 runs in the bottom of the first and never trailed as they held the Nationals scoreless until the 8th inning… Kevin Gausman gave the Braves 7 strong innings picking up the win allowing only 5 hits and giving up 1 earned run while striking out 8 and walking none… The Braves pounded out 11 hits off 5 National pitchers and two of them were homers… Josh Donaldson (23) had a solo homer in the 6th inning and Ronald Acuna Jr. (24) had a 2-run homer in the 8th.
  • Next for the Braves… The Braves are off tonight and will host the Kansas City Royals in a 2-game home series starting tomorrow night.


Drive… The Greenville Drive completed their 4-game home series with the Columbia Fireflies over the weekend… In case you missed it, they started the series off with a 5-1 win on Thursday night.

  • Friday: Drive 9 – Fireflies 4… The Drive made it 2 in a row on Friday as they took a 9-4 win over the Fireflies… They only outhit the Fireflies 8-7 but were aided by 3 Columbia errors… Two of the Drives hits were homers while the Fireflies only had 1.
  • Saturday: Fireflies 6 – Drive 3On Saturday the Fireflies avoided the sweep by taking a 6-3 win over the Drive… They did outhit the Drive 9-7 but did receive some help in the win as the Drive committed 5 errors in the game.
  • Sunday: Drive 16 – Fireflies 5The Drive completed the series yesterday by taking a 16-5 win in a spanking of the Fireflies… The Drives bats were as hot as the weather as they pounded out 22 hits while 4 Drive pitchers held the Fireflies to just 8 hits.
  • Up Next for the Drive… The Drive also have the night off tonight and they need it as thy start a long road-trip tomorrow night up in New Jersey with the Delmarva Shorebirds.

This & That: 

Football and Cheerleading at the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Department… Registration is now open for tackle football and cheerleading at the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Department…. These are open to youth ages 7-12 and the cost is $60 per person plus a $25 equipment rental fee for those participating in football…. You can register at The Ridgeon Exchange Drive during their normal business hours and if you have any questions visit them there of call 681-7275… The last day to register is July 26th.


 Flag Football and Cheerleading at the Clinton YMCA… Registration is now open for flag football and cheerleading at the Clinton Family YMCA… There will be 3 age appropriate divisions for flag football that include 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12 years old…Cheerleading is for youth in kindergarten through 6th grade… Now for more information about this such as cost, age date determination, fall-out dates and financial assistance click here or call the YMCA at 833-1555… The last day to register is August 16th.


 Raider Youth Softball Camp… Starting June 10th and running through August 26th Coach Michaela Smith will be offering a FREE softball camp on Mondays for young ladies in grades 1-6…. There is no registration required and all you need to bring is your glove… Again the clinic is free and it is on Mondays at the LDHS softball field or adjacent hitting building from 7:00 pm until 8:00 pm… If you have any questions email Coach Smith at:


Raider Youth Volleyball Camp… On Friday, August 9th Coach Lake and the LDHS volley ball team will be conducting a camp from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Auxiliary Gym and LDHS… The camp is for 3rd through 8th graders and the cost id only $40… Lunch will be provided but there are a couple of things the camper should bring… To find out what they are and for more information about this camp, click here… To register for the camp click here… Don’t let this opportunity to improve your child’s volleyball skills pass you by!


Clinton YMCA Summer Sports Camps, Swimming Lessons and Pool Schedule… The Clinton YMCA has a full summer of sports camps scheduled and again this summer they will be offering swimming lessons just about every week…. Laurens YMCA Summer Sports and Specialty Camps … Starting July 1st, the Laurens family YMCA will be having several sports and specialty camps… All camps cost $50 for YMCA members and $60 for non-members…. The next 2 camps are: Soccer Camp July 29-August 1, Ages 5-9 at 9-11 am, Ages 15 and up at 6:00-8:00 pm… Goal! Take your soccer skills to the next level! PC Season Football Tickets on Sale

  • PC has 6 home games this season and the first one is on Saturday, Sept 14 when the Blue Hose host Jacksonville.
  • Blue chair back reserve seats are only $90.00 for the entire 6-game home season.
  • Parking is $5 per game but season parking passes are available for $25.
  • Per game seating (subject to availability) is $20 per game for chair type seats bench general admission will be $10 per seat for adults and $5 for students.
