Local Notes:

Laurens Little League (L3) Majors Stay Alive in State Tournament

  • L3 11 – Irmo 8… The L3 Majors got back into action last night in the state tournament sown in Summerville after a day off due to rain on Tuesday… Good news for Laurens fans as they took 11-8 win over an all-star team from Irmo in an elimination game.… Irmo jumped out to the early lead scoring 3 runs in the top of the first inning using a walk, a single and a homerun to get the 3 runs… However Laurens responded by scoring 6 runs in the bottom of the first inning and then never trailed again though Irmo kept it close… Laurens used an Irmo error, a double, 3 walks (one of them with bases loaded) and a grand slam homerun by Jireh Brown to score those 6 runs… Irmo did tie the game in the top of the third inning by scoring 3 more runs but L3 responded by plating 3 runs of their own in the bottom of the third inning to go up 9-6… L3 scored those 3 runs on a single and 5 walks 3 of which occurred when the bases were loaded… Irmo added another run in the fourth inning to make it 9-7 Laurens… Laurens plated 2 more runs in the bottom of the of the fifth inning to make it 11-7 when Josh Goodwin doubled driving in Jireh Brown who reached on a double and Jay Williams who reached on a single… Irmo did manage to score 1 more run in the top of the sixth inning but Laurens would allow them to get no closer…
  • Stats: Irmo actually outhit Laurens 11-6 but the one Irmo error and a total of 9 walks issued by 4 Irmo pitchers aided the Laurens cause…. Three Laurens pitchers did issue 6 scattered walks themselves while striking out 5 Irmo batters… Rylan Paxton was credited with the win and Coleman Coker the save…. Gosh Goodwin and Jireh Brown each had 2 of the Laurens hits with both having a double and Brown the big 4-run homer in the first inning.
  • Next: I know that Laurens will now have the only undefeated team in the tournament Northwood and must beat them twice to win the championship… Northwood handed Laurens its only loss back on Monday by a score of 8-4… They will play them tonight at 7:00 pm and if Laurens wins the winner-take-all game will be tomorrow at 7:00 pm… Good Luck to the L3 majors tonight!

  • Royals 2 – Braves 0The Braves and the Royals finished their short 2-game series last night in Atlanta and the Braves will be glad to see them go as the Royals took a 2-0 thus sweeping series… The Royals scored both their runs in the 2nd inning on a Braves error, a walk, a single and a double… Both teams had 5 hits and no Brave had more than 1 hit… The Braves are off tonight and will start a 6-game road trip tomorrow with the first stop being in Philadelphia.
  • Drive… The Greenville Drive played a doubleheader with the Delmarva Shorebirds u in Maryland yesterday and it is not good news for Drive fans as the Shorebirds won both games…. They won the first game 4-0 simply because they outhit the Drive 8-2…. The Shorebirds won the second game by a score of 2-0… The reason is really the same as in the first game as the Shorebird outhit the Drive 7-3…. The two teams finish the current series tonight.
