Local Notes

LDHS: Raiders:

  • Laurens 8 – Spring Valley 8… The Laurens Raiders traveled down to Chapin last Saturday night to participate in their jamboree playing a half of football against the Spring Valley Vikings… Almost from the start of the contest the teams could see lightning off in the distance to the north so little time was wasted in the half…Laurens took early lead when they trapped the Viking quarterback in the end zone for a safety somewhere about the 7 minute mark of the first quarter… Soon after that the Raiders muffed a punt attempt deep in their own territory and the Vikings took over at the raider 5 yard line…. The raider defense rose to the occasion and snuffed the Vikings on a fourth and six inches to go to keep the Vikings out of the end zone and preserve the 2-0 lead… The Raiders later scored on about a 3 yard run by Ryan Campbell but extra point went wide to make it 8-0… Spring Valley later moved down the field on a couple of big pass plays and a 15 yard penalty on the Raiders and scored to make it 8-6 Raiders… They went for the 2-point conversion and were successful to tie the game 8-8… Both teams had trouble moving the ball until the last possession of the game when the Vikings moved down into scoring position and tried a 47 yard field goal as time ran out which was no good as the game ended in an 8-8 tie… Ryan Campbell was selected as offensive player of the game… Afterwards Coach Liner said he was overall pleased with team’s performance against a good Spring Valley team but they still have work to do eliminating mistakes.

Laurens Academy Crusaders:

  • Crusaders Split at Richard Winn… The Laurens Academy Crusaders traveled down to Richard Winn on Friday night to participate in their jamboree… They played a quarter of football against two different opponents… In the second quarter they took the field against a team made up of players from Cambridge Academy and Palmetto Christian Academy in Greenwood… God news here for Crusader fans as they rolled to a 20-0 win… They took the field again in the last quarter against the host Richard Winn Eagles… The two teams managed only 8 points in the quarter of football but unfortunately for Crusader fans they were scored by Richard win as they took an 8-0 win.

  • Friday: Dodgers 8 – Braves 3… The braves carried a 3-2 lead into the top of the 7th inning where the Dodgers put 4 runs on the board and then added 2 more in the 8th inning to take an 83 win over the Braves… The Dodgers outhit the Braves 11-6 and no Brave had more than 1 hit.
  • Saturday: Braves 4 – Dodgers 3… On Saturday the Braves rebounded to take a 4-3 win over the Dodgers as the Braves bullpen bent but did not break in the late innings of the game… The Dodgers outhit the Braves 9-7 and booth teams had a pair of homers…. The Dodgers homers were solo shots as were the Braves… Josh Donaldson (29) and Adam Duval (6) had the Braves homers in the 6th inning… Donaldson was the only Brave with more than 1 hit as he had the homer and a double.
  • Sunday: Braves 5 – Dodgers 3… In the rubber game of the series yesterday, the Braves took a 5-3 win to win the series 2 game to 1…. Drive… The Greenville Drive finished their 4-game series with the Hickory Crawdads over the weekend at Flour Field….As you may recall the Crawdads took a 5-1 win Thursday night.

  • Friday: Crawdads 1 – Greenville 0… The two teams hooked up in a pitcher’s duel on Friday in a game that had only 8 hits and one run scored…. The bad news for Drive fans that 6 of the hits and the one run belonged to the Crawdads as they took a 1-0 win over the Drive.
  • Saturday: Crawdads 5 – Drive 4… Now Saturday’s game did have a few more hits and a few more runs scored than Friday’s game but the Crawdads still took a one-run victory by a score of 5-4… They scored the winning run in the top of the 9th inning and then held the Drive in the bottom of the inning.
  • Sunday: Drive 3 – Crawdads 2… Yesterday the Drive managed to avoid being swept by the Crawdads as they took a 3-2 win… The Drive led 3-1 going into the 9th inning where the Crawdads added another run but could get no closer as the Drive took the 3-1 win.
