Hornets Roll to 32-12 Win to Open Season

  • The Ware Sholas Hornets opened the Chris Johnston era last Friday night with a 32-12 win over the Oakbrook Prep Knights up in Spartanburg… Jermarius Goodman had 3 TDs for the Hornets… He had a 54 yard pick-six in the first quarter and then added 2 more TDs later in the game on runs of 1 and 33 yards… Davis Blakely returned the opening kickoff of the second half 71 yards for a Hornet TD… The Hornet defense intercepted another Knight pass and recovered at least on Knight Fumble… Coach Johnston was obviously proud of the team as they made some mistakes which can happen in the first game and when you install a new offense but they fought through them for the win… For a more complete narrative of the game, click here… The Hornets travel to Calhoun Falls to take on the Blue Flashes this Friday night.

Braves…. The Braves were up in New York this weekend for a 3-game series with the Mets.

  • Friday: Braves 2 – Mets 1… On Friday the fans in New York were treated to a lot of free baseball as the game went 14 innings but the god news for the Braves fans is that they defeated the Mets 2-1… Both teams scored single runs in the 6th inning and the Braves’ came on an RBI single by Freddie Freeman driving in Ozzie Albies… The Braves picked up the winning run in the top of the 14th inning when Tyler Flowers led the inning off drawing a walk and was later driven in by Billy Hamilton’s RBI single.
  • Saturday: Braves 9 – Mets 5… On Saturday the Mets put 4 runs on the board in the 5th inning to go up 5-4 on the Braves but the Braves tied it with a single run in the 6th inning and then added two more runs in the 8th and 9th innings to take a 9-5 win over the Mets… Three different Braves had solo homers in the game and they were Ozzie Albies (1(), Josh Donaldson (30) and Freddie Freeman (35)… Freeman’s homerun in the 9th inning was a long drive to centerfield that gives him 35 homers on the season his personal best in homeruns in a season.
  • Sunday: Braves 2 – Mets 1… Yesterday the Braves pulled the brooms out of the bat bags as they took a 2-1 win over the Mets to sweep the 3-game series… Josh Donaldson accounted for all the Braves runs as he had a pair of solo homers in the game… He had one in the 2nd inning and another in the 7th to give him 32 homers on the season… The Braves travel out to Colorado this afternoon to makeup a weather delayed game with the Rockies from back in April… First pitch is scheduled for 3:10 pm EDT.

Drive… The Greenville Drive hosted the Ashville Tourist over the weekend up at Flour Field.

  • Friday: Drive 11 – Tourist 1… On Friday night the Drive found something that they had been missing lately and that is offense as they pounded out 11 hits and took an 11-1 win over the Tourist… Pf the 11 hits only 2 were extra bases… Jordan Wren had a double in the 5th inning to drive in a run and Kevin Suarez had a 2-run homer in the 7th inning.
  • Saturday: Drive 7 – Tourist 0… On Saturday something else happened that has been a rare occurrence the last couple of months, the won their second game in a row as they defeated the Tourist 7-0… They pounded out 9 hits to the Tourist 1 and 2 of those 9 hits were homes both coming in the first inning… Tyler Esplin (5) had a 2-run homer and Triston Casas (18) a solo homer.
  • Sunday: Tourist 7 – Drive 6… Yesterday the two teams closed out the series with what you might call a slug fest as they pounded out a total of 25 hits and 13 runs but the only problem for Drive fans is that the Tourist won 7-6… The Tourist had 12 hits two of which were homers while the Drive had no homers among their 13 hits… The Drive now start a 4-game series tonight at home with the Augusta GreenJackets… This will be the last 4 home games of their season.
