Sports Report for Wednesday, 9-11-2018

Local Notes:

Laurens Academy

  • Volleyball: WW King 3 – LA 2… The Crusader volleyball teams hosted the Knights of WW King last night in region action… In varsity action it was a back and forth affair that saw the Crusaders fall 3-2… The Knights won the first set 25-22 but the Crusaders turned right around and won the second set by the same 25-22 score… The Knights then won the third set 25-20 but once again the Crusaders rebounded to tie the match by taking the fourth set by a score of 25-20… The fifth and deciding set went to the wire with the Knights taking a 15-13 score thus winning the match 3-2… A heart-breaker for the Crusaders… The team is now 2-4 on the season.
  • MS Volleyball: LA 2 – WW King 0… Now the news is better where the middle school squad is concerned as they ran their season record to 5-1 by taking a 2-0 win over the Knights… Sorry no set scores…The teams will be back in action tomorrow as they host the Newberry Academy Eagles.


Laurens County Speedway Results… Looking at the results from each of the divisions main events at the LCS last Saturday night you find:

  • SECA 604 Crate… Dale Timms took the win in the SECA Crate main event by almost 4 seconds over second place finisher Brandon Carpenter after starting last in the race… He took the win after also winning at the Cherokee County Speedway earlier in the evening… Pat Lindsey finished third.
  • Limited… In the Limited Main event which was also the Robert Godfrey Memorial Race, Taylor Puckett got past Frank Coates on lap 15 to take the win with Coates finishing second… Josh Richeson took third.
  • Thunder Bombers… The Thunder Bombers main event saw Scott Pulley take the lead at the start of the race and never surrender it to take the win… Chris Lyons was the next driver to cross the finish line followed by Dan Lawson coming in third.
  • 602 Crate… It took two starts to get the 602 Crate going but once they did Chris Patterson took the win holding off Colby Cannon early in the race and then pulling away for the win… Larry Timms managed to get past Cannon to take second with Cannon coming in third.
  • 4-Cylinder… Aaron Summitt held off Jeff McGurity to take the win by just under a second in the 4-Cylinder main event… Phillip Wilson finished third.
  • FWD… The Front-Wheel Drive main event saw division points leader Travis Jamieson take the win leading start to finish…. Damien Norwood and Billy Medlin were the next two drivers to take the checkered flag in that order.

  • Phillies 6 – Braves 5… In game two of their four-game series with the Braves in Philadelphia last night, the Phillies used the long-ball to take a 6-5 win over the Braves… The Phillies had 5 homeruns off the Braves pitching staff last night including 3 in the first inning, an inside-the-park homer by Scott Kingery in the third inning and another homer in the sixth inning…. The Braves did outhit the Phillies 10-8 but only one of their hits was a homer and that came off the bat of Johan Camargo (7) in the eighth inning.

Laurens County TD Club

  • The Laurens County Touchdown Club meets every other Thursday at noon out at The Ridge the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Headquarters on Exchange Drive…. If you would like to see the entire schedule and information on how to join the club, click here.
  • The next meeting is September 12 and in addition to the local high school coaches talking about their past and upcoming games, Tommy Spangler the Head Coach at PC will be the featured speaker.

This and That

Youth Soccer at Clinton YMCA… Registration is now open at the Clinton Family YMCA for Youth Soccer for youth ages 3-12 divided into 3 appropriate age groupings (3-5, 6-8 & 9-12)… The cost is $55 for YMCA members and $75 for non-members… The YMCA will not deny anyone the opportunity to participate in its youth sports activities…. Interested participants are encouraged to register well before the Monday, September 23rd deadline… For additional information and interest call the Clinton YMCA at 833-1555….  Run Hog Wild… The Laurens Family YMCA in conjunction with Self Regional Healthcare and Piedmont Orthopedic Associates of the Lakelands will be holding a 1 mile run on October 5, 2019 starting at 9 am…  Proceeds will help the children of our community by going to the Laurens City Police for their Christmas in the City program and for the YMCA Youth Scholarship program… The cost is $15 if you don’t want a T-shirt and $25 if you do…  Registration the day of the race will start at 8 am at Laurens Middle School which is where the race will start… You can register at….
