Sports Report for Thursday, 9-19-2019

Local Notes:

CHS Red Devils:

  • Tennis: CHS 6 – Union County 1… On Tuesday the lady Red Devil tennis team hosted the Union County Yellow Jackets as the Red Devil opened up region play… It was a great opening for the Red Devil as they defeated the Jackets 6-1… Mary Catherine Dailey, Chandler Dailey, Reese Gowan, Gracie Spangler and Jerri Hill all took wins in singles action… MC Dailey and Chandler Dailey also teamed up to form the #1 doubles team and they also defeated their opponents… For more information on this match, click here.
  • Volleyball: Union County 3 – CHS 0… Also on Tuesday the Red Devil volleyball team hosted the Union County Yellow Jackets… Not good news here as Union took a 3-0 win by set scores of 25-11, 25-13 and 25-14…IN JV action prior to the varsity match Union took a 2-0 win by set scores of 25-15 and 25-20.
  • Boys Cross Country… Also on Tuesday the Red Devils hosted a cross country meet that has a total of 6 teams participating… Clinton finished first with a low score of 42… Nick Perkins led the Red Devils finishing 5th with a time of 19:39… To see how other Red Devil runners did, click here…  By the way the Raiders were one of the teams in the meet and they finished 3rd with a score of 83… Remember like golf it’s the low score who wins.
  • Girls Cross Country… The Lady Red Devil cross country team also participated in the same meet on Tuesday and they did not finish as well as the boys… They finished 5th with a total of 98 points… Dorothy Trent was the top runner for the Red Devils finish the course in 22:54 which gave her a 5th place finish… For more information on this meet, click here… The Laurens Raiders were also at the meet and the girls finished third with 84 points.

 

LDHS Raiders:

  • Boys Cross Country… I have already mentioned that the Raider boys cross country team finished third at Clinton on Tuesday with a score of 83… They were led by junior Luis Rios-Brenna, who won with a personal record of 18:44. He was followed by Zak Brown, Pedro Juan, Murphy Rush, and Zach Neal.
  • Girls Cross Country… I have also mentioned that the Raider girls finished third at Clinton Tuesday with a score of 84… The Lady Raiders were led by sophomore Ryleigh Bragg. Ryleigh finished 7th with a personal record of 23:50. She was followed by fellow Raiders, Zoey Sward, JaNyiah Jones, Sofia Alvarez, and Karina Hernandez.
  • Tennis: JL Mann 7 – Laurens 0… The Lady Raider tennis team was also in action on Tuesday as they traveled to JL Mann to take on the always strong Lady Patriots… The patriots look to be loaded again this season as they took a 7-0 win over the raiders snapping the Raiders winning streak at 3… For more information on this match, click here.
  • Volleyball: Westside 3 – Laurens 0…. Tuesday was a busy night for high school; athletics as the Raider volleyball team was also in action traveling to Anderson to take on the Westside Rams…The Raiders had a tough night as they fell to the Rams 3-0… Set scores were 25-15, 25-18 and 25-15… To see some comments from Coach Lake about the match and a few more details, click here….   • Phillies 4 – Braves 1… The Braves outhit the Phillies 5-4 in the second game of their 3-game series in Atlanta last night but that is NOT what determines who wins as the Phillies scored 4 runs to the Braves 1 to take the win…. Two of the Phillies hits were homers while all 5 of the Braves hits were singles.

Laurens County TD Club

  • The Laurens County Touchdown Club meets every other Thursday at noon out at The Ridge the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Headquarters on Exchange Drive…. If you would like to see the entire schedule and information on how to join the club, click here.
  • The next meeting is September 26 and in addition to the local high school coaches talking about their past and upcoming games, Buddy Pough the Head Coach at South Carolina State will be the featured speaker.

Youth Soccer at Clinton YMCA… Registration is now open at the Clinton Family YMCA for Youth Soccer for youth ages 3-12 divided into 3 appropriate age groupings (3-5, 6-8 & 9-12)… The cost is $55 for YMCA members and $75 for non-members… The YMCA will not deny anyone the opportunity to participate in its youth sports activities…. Interested participants are encouraged to register well before the Monday, September 23rd deadline… For additional information and interest call the Clinton YMCA at 833-1555…. Run Hog Wild… The Laurens Family YMCA in conjunction with Self Regional Healthcare and Piedmont Orthopedic Associates of the Lakelands will be holding a 1 mile run on October 5, 2019 starting at 9 am…  Proceeds will help the children of our community by going to the Laurens City Police for their Christmas in the City program and for the YMCA Youth Scholarship program… The cost is $15 if you don’t want a T-shirt and $25 if you do…  Registration the day of the race will start at 8 am at Laurens Middle School which is where the race will start… You can register at wwwlakelandsymva.org/programs….
