Newberry Children Recovered, Dad Arrested

An AMBER Alert was issued Saturday from Newberry for two missing children who authorities indicated were kidnapped Saturday morning. WYFF4.com reported that the alert was cancelled just before 3 O’clock Saturday afternoon. This came after SLED indicated the children were located, but the accused abductor had not been arrested.

SLED said the children were taken from a home on Brown Chapel Circle, reporting that the non-custodial father of the 11 and 3-year-old children had taken them. A WYFF report indicates the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office said the children were located at a known address for Tommy Lee Toland in Calhoun County. Deputies said authorities from Calhoun County found the children and they appeared to be unharmed. About an hour later, deputies said, Calhoun County authorities arrested Tommy Lee Toland. Deputies indicated Toland was to face two counts of kidnapping and one count of burglary.

The WYFF4.com report states that authorities also state that Mr. Toland is a registered sex offender. Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster said that Toland “was a non-custodial parent, a tier 3 sex offender, and we also felt like he may have done some harm to the children because he threatened other people in the house with burning the house down around them.”

The Newberry County Detention Center shows 43-year-old Tommy Lee Toland has been charged with 2nd Degree Burglary and with Transport of noncustodial children. During an initial court appearance this weekend,  bond was denied on both charges.
