Sports Report for Monday, 10-7-2019

Local Notes:

CHS Red Devils:

  • Union County 54 – Clinton 21… The Red Devils opened region play last Friday night at home hosting the Union County Yellow Jackets… Union took a 47-7 lead into the locker room at the half and then went on to take a 54-21 win over the Red Devils… Obviously it was a rough first half for the Red Devils as Union scored on each of their possession in the half except the last when the clock ran out to end the half… They had five rushing TDs in the first half and two passing…. The Red Devils only TD in the first half came with 10:56 left in the half when Shyquan Kinard broke off a 75 yard run for the score and with Juan Lawson’s PAT the score stood 21-7 at the time… The Red Devils regrouped at halftime and came back out on their first possession of the third quarter and drove 79 yards in 13 plays scoring when Kinard again scored this time from 2 yards out while burning 7:31 seconds off the clock… Lawson’s PAT made it 47-14…. Union responded scoring again early in the fourth quarter to make it 54-14 and eh Red Devils scored on last time with 3:45 left in the game when Kinard once again carried it in this time from 61 yards out… Lawson’s PAT made it 54-21 which was the final score.
  • Stats…  Union rushed for 300 yards to the Red Devils 265… Shy Kinard led the Red Devils with 176 yards and 3 TDS averaging 22 yards on 8 carries… The big difference in the game was passing yards where Union had 217 yards to Clinton’s 10 giving Union a total of 517 yards of offense to Clinton’s 275… To see the complete stat package, click here… The Red Devils are now 2-4 on the season and 0-1 in region play and travel to Prosperity this Friday night to take on the Rebels who are 2-4 on the season and 1-0 in region play and coming off a 13-12 win at Emerald last Friday night.

LDHS Raiders:

  • Laurens 20 – Westside 17… The Laurens Raiders hosted the Westside Rams last Friday night and the Raiders never led until there was just 2:09 left in the game where the Westside punter either shanked the punt to his left or had it tipped and Isaac Craig got the ball and raced 66 yards to put Laurens up 20-17 with the PAT failing…  This capped a 13 point comeback for the Raiders but the Rams still had some time… They worked the ball down to the Raider 24 yard line facing a 4 and 5 situation with 34 seconds left on the clock when hesitation caused the Rams a delay of game penalty moving the ball back to the 29 and the ensuing field goal attempt fell well short and the celebration was on even before the Raiders took the final “Victory Kneel”… Westside scored first at the 1:11 mark of the first quarter on a 19 yard run and the PAT made it 7-0 on a short drive that was set up when a Raider pass was tipped and then intercepted… The Raiders got on the board just 2 plays later when the Rams bit on a dive play up the middle and Ryan Campbell pulled the ball out at the last second and raced 76 yard fort eh score… Jesus Esparaza added the PAT and the score was tied 7-7 with 25 seconds left in the first quarter… Both teams had trouble mounting a drive until just before the half ended when the Rams got close enough to kick a 33 yard field goal to make it 10-7 at the half… Westside got the ball first in the third quarter and drove 61 yards using up 7:50 off  the clock to score on a 1 yard run and with the PAT the score stood 17-7 Rams… The Raiders scored next with 8:23 left in the game when Campbell again carried it in from 9 yards out capping a 68 yard drive… Esparaza’s PAT made it 17-14… That set the stage for Craig’s punt return later in the quarter.
  • Stats… The Raiders had 233 yards of total offense to the Rams 237… The Raiders had 207 yards of their offense on the ground compared to the Rams 162… Campbell led the Raiders with 132 yards rushing and the 3 TDs… To see the complete stat package, click here… The Raiders move to 4-1 on the season… They and Woodmont are tied for the region lead as they both have 3-0 records in region play… The tie will be broken this Friday night when the Raiders travel to Woodmont to take on the Wildcats in a game that very well could decide the region championship.

Laurens Academy Crusaders:

  • Clarendon Hall 44 – Crusaders 22… The Laurens Academy Crusaders traveled down to Clarendon Hall Academy to take on the Saints last Friday… The heat and the Saints got to the Crusaders as they fell by a score of 44-22 in a game that had to be called in the fourth quarter because the Crusaders ran out of players able to play because of the heat and cramps… Diamonte Grant scored on a 30 yard reverse with Clarence Bertoli adding the 2-point PAT to make it 12-8 Saints at the time… Just before the half Thomas Lowry connected with Grant for score and Lowry then hit Bertoli for the 2-point conversion to make it 16-12 Crusaders at the half… The Crusaders final score came on a 5 yard run by Bertoli with the PAT being missed with 10:43 left in the third period… By the way that score was set up when Grant intercepted a Saints pass… After that it was all Clarendon Hall as the Saints imposed their will on the Crusaders until the Crusaders just could not muster enough players to put on the field… The Crusaders fall to 2-3 on the season and travel to Richard Winn this Friday night.
