Another Bridge Closed, Council Approves Assessment Study

Another Laurens County bridge has been closed, following notice from the South Carolina Department of Transportation. Like four other recent closings, this bridge is also in Northern Laurens County.

Laurens County Public Works Director Dale Satterfield said that an email from SCDOT cited a bridge on Harris Grove Church Road, north of where it intersects with Highway 101 in the Youngs Community.

Satterfield noted that the Laurens County Roads and Bridges Division has been working diligently on developing an inventory and asset management for all our bridges and pipes.  It is anticipated that the County may have more than ten million dollars in deficient bridge and pipe structures.  He noted the Laurens County Roads Division operates and maintains in excess of 700 roads totaling over 460 miles.

Dale Satterfield said emergency service agencies have been advised of the bridge closing in order to adjust their response patterns as needed. He said that SCDOT is finding unsafe bridges across the state.

Laurens County Council last evening adopted a proposal for an assessment of all bridges in the County. The $38,500 award to Davis and Floyd Engineering of Greenwood is to have three phases of assessments of the bridges, including those already closed for safety.
