Process Begins to Extend Clinton Blue Law Suspension

South Carolina law bans the sale of many products on Sunday until after 1:00 PM.  However, state law allows local governments to suspend the enforcement of these laws, often called “blue laws”, for up to six months.  Many local governments take advantage of that provision and suspend enforcement of blue laws twice each year for six months each time.

At the Clinton City Council October meeting this week, Clinton City Council, City Manager Bill Ed Cannon presented council with an ordinance suspending enforcement of the state’s blue laws effective January 1st, 2020.   The current ordinance allowing business to be conducted on Sundays will expire December 31st.

The ordinance passed council on first reading Monday evening unanimous vote, without discussion.
