  • Not Much Going On… With football winding down and basketball practice underway, there are not a lot of local sports to bring to you today.

College Sports

Football:

  • College Football Playoff Rankings… The FBS College Football Playoff Committee released their latest rankings last night and with Alabama losing to LSU this past Saturday there was some shakeup in the rankings… LSU has moved up from #2 to #1 and Ohio State dropped from #1 to #2… Clemson jumped up 2 spots to #3 as di Georgia who went from #6 to #4… The rest of the top 10 in order are Alabama, Oregon, Utah, Minnesota, Penn State and Oklahoma… If you would like to see the entire top 25 as the committee sees it, click here.

 

Men’s Basketball

  • AP Poll… The men’s basketball DI AP Poll came out Sunday night and in case you missed it there was some shakeup in the top 10 from the previous poll… Kentucky moved up a step to take the #1 spot and is followed by Duke who went from #4 to #2… The previous #1 Michigan State dropped to #3 followed by Louisville and Kansas to round out the top 5… Spots 6-10 are occupied by North Carolina, Maryland, Gonzaga, Virginia and Kansas… If you would like to see the entire 25 team poll, click here
  • Evansville Upsets Kentucky… Now before we move away from the AP Poll I’ll bet you that there will be a new #1 next week as last night at Rupp Arena in Lexington the Purple Aces of Evansville University out of Evansville, Indiana took a 67-64 win over the Wildcats… This broke Kentucky’s 52 game home winning streak against non-conference opponents… The Purple Aces are coached by Walter McCarty who played for Kentucky from 1993-96 and was on their 1996 national championship team… Click here for more details on the game.
  • PC Men’s Basketball… The Blue Hose men’s basketball team is 1-1 on the season… They opened the season against Clemson last week and fell by a score of 79-45 to Tigers…Click here for details on this game… This past Monday the Blue Hose traveled to VMI and took an 80-77 win over the Keydets… JC Younger hit a three-point shot with less than a second left in overtime to give PC the win… Click here for detail on this game…. PC will host Morehead state tomorrow at 7:00 pm
  • Clemson Men’s Basketball… The Tigers are 2-1 on the young season as they lost their first game on Tuesday, 11-5 to Virginia Tech by a score of 67-60 at Clemson… Click here for detail on this game… As mentioned above, they defeated PC 79-45 two days later at home… Click here for detail on this game from the Clemson point of view… This past Sunday they defeated Colgate 81-68… Click here for detail on this game… Their next game is against Detroit Mercy this Sunday at Clemson
  • South Carolina Men’s Basketball… The South Carolina Gamecock men’s basketball team is 2-0 on the season… They defeated North Alabama 77-55 on Wednesday. 11-5 at home… Click here for detail on this game… This past Sunday they were back in action as they hosted Wyoming and took a 66-32 win over the Cowboys… Click here for detail on this game… They will host Cleveland state Friday at 7:00 pm.

Laurens County TD Club

  • The Laurens County Touchdown Club meets every other Thursday at noon out at The Ridge the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Headquarters on Exchange Drive…. If you would like to see the entire schedule and information on how to join the club, click here.
  • The next meeting is November 21st and in addition to the local high school coaches talking about their past and upcoming games, it will be the annual Carolina – Clemson day.

Raider Softball Chicken Stew Fund Raiser… The Laurens Raider softball team is selling chicken stew to help raise funds for equipment travel and other expenses that are not fully covered by district funds… The stew will be cooked on Friday, November 15 and will be ready for pick up the next day (Saturday, November 16) at the Hickory Tavern Fire department… The stew will be $8 per quart and to order yours see any member of the Raider softball team either varsity or JV players… You can also contact Coach Smith to order your stew… Her email address is: mesmith@laurens55.org… Don’t wait too long to order you stew, I already have!

 

 Youth Basketball at the Ridge… Youth basketball registration in now underway at The Ridge the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Headquarters on Exchange Drive… Youth basketball is for ages 7-12 and the cost is only $40… You can register daily at The Ridge from now until November 23rd…. If you have any questions call them at 681-7275.

 

Youth Basketball at the Laurens YMCA… Youth basketball registration is under way at the Laurens Family YMCA for youth 3-6… The cost is $40 and registration will close on January 12, 2020… You can register at the YMCA during normal operating hours and if you have any questions call them at 984-2621

 

Youth Basketball and Cheerleading at the Clinton YMCA… Registration is also open at the Clinton YMCA for both youth basketball and cheerleading… Youth basketball will be for youth ages 5-12 in 6 appropriate age groupings… Registration will close December 9th and the cost is $50 for Y members and $65 for non-members and financial help is available… Now for more information about this you can click here to open up document about youth basketball and cheerleading by the Y or call them at 833-1555… Register at the Clinton YMCA during normal business hours.

 

2019 Reindeer Run… The 2019 version of the Laurens YMCA Reindeer Run will take place on 12-14-19… The 5K race will start at 9:00 am and the Fun Run for ages 1-12 will start at 9:05… There is discount for early registration ($25) which will end November 22nd and will be $30 after that… There are also team discount available… You can register at the YMCA or online at: www.active.com… There is more information on the flyer for the event that you can see if you click here.
