Coroner Nichols Dies

Laurens County Coroner Nick Nichols died yesterday afternoon at the Laurens County Hospital, following an extended illness. A Hearse carrying his remains left the hospital around 5:00 yesterday afternoon, escorted by multiple vehicles from local law enforcement agencies as it traveled through Laurens and up to the Greenville County Line, before delivery to Fletcher Funeral Home of Fountain Inn.

Nick Nichols served for about two decades as coroner of Laurens County after serving as a deputy coroner for over fifteen years. During Nick Nichol’s tenure as coroner he lobbied County Council to fund improvements in the coroner’s office and He also worked with Laurens County Hospital management for establishment of a morgue there.

Nick Nichols is survived by his wife, Myra, who also has many years of public service. In paying tribute to Nick Nichols at Clinton City Council last night, Mayor Bob McLain noted that in addition to Nick’s many years with the coroner’s office, Myra Nichols served as Mayor of Clinton from 1994 to 2003. In addition to Mrs. Nichols, Nick is also survived by their two sons and by grandchildren.

Meanwhile, Chief Deputy Coroner Vickie Cheek and the other Deputy Coroners are maintaining the duties of the coroner’s office.
