Sports Report for Wednesday, 12-4-2019

Local Notes:

LDHS Raiders: Last night the Laurens Raiders had their home opener as they hosted the Rams of Hillcrest in varsity basketball action

  • G: Rams 74 – Raiders 32… The Lady Raiders took to the court for the first time this season as the usual preseason tournament at BHP they traditionally play in was canceled… Unfortunately for the Raiders you could tell it was their first game ads they lost 74-32 to the Rams… It was a game that saw the Raider offense struggle under pressure from the Ram defense and the Raiders at times in the first half had more turnovers than they did points… By the time the half rolled around the score was 42-12 Rams and they never looked back… Qua Fortson led the Raiders with 9 points… CaDayzhia Grant finished with 6, Raniya Jackson 5, Nadia Anderson, while Ashanti Conway and Macayle Revis had 3, MK Moore 2 and Lamoria Allen 1.
  • B: Rams 75 – Raiders 70… In the boys’ game the Rams took a 75-70 win but the Raiders did not go down without a fight… The Rams carried a 43-31 lead into the locker room at the half and built on that in the third quarter to lead by 19 with about 4 minutes left to play… That is when the Raiders caught fire and led by Dee Foster scoring 3 three-point baskets and both Dra Copeland and Leonard Williams getting hot also the Raiders fought back and only trailed 55-52 going into the final quarter of play… The Raiders continued the comeback in the fourth quarter and di8d take a 1 point lead with about a minute left in the game but Hillcrest made a the key free throws and buckets down the stretch to pull out the win… Dee Foster finished with a game-high 25 points while both Dra Copeland and Leonard Williams finished with 17 points.. JQ fair had 6 points, Preston Mahon 3 and Nigel Owens 2… The Raiders are now 1-3 on the season and the Raiders will host Clinton this Friday night in round 1 of the “County Championship”…. Those games will NOT be broadcast.

Laurens Academy Crusaders: Yesterday the Laurens Academy Crusaders traveled up to Spartanburg Christian Academy to take on the Warriors… Spartanburg Christian is a much larger school than Laurens Academy and their teams are traditionally very strong.

  • G: SCA 55 – LA 31In varsity girl’s action the Warriors jumped out to a 21-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and then went on to take a 55-31 win over the Crusaders… The Warriors led 50-19 going into the fourth quarter where the Crusaders did outscore them 12-5 but it was too little too late…. Blair Quarles led the Crusaders with a game-high 14 points and Reagan Williamson was also in double-digits with 10 points… Olivia Hick finished with 5 points and Payton Breen 2… The Crusaders are now 3-2 on the season.
  • B: SCA 73 – LA 25… I am afraid the news is no better where the Crusader boys are concerned as the Warriors took a 73-25 win over the Crusaders… The Warriors wasted little time getting ahead as their offense scored 21 points in the first quarter while holding the Crusaders to just 4 points… From that point on they never looked back as the Crusaders struggled offensively and were actually held scoreless in the final quarter… Caio Rita and Diamonte Grant led the Crusaders in scoring with 6 points each… Thomas Lowry and Clarence Bertoli finished with 4 points each, Cal Robertson had 3 and Luke Kerber rounded out the Crusader scoring with 2 points… The Crusaders are now 2-2 on the season and will be back in action this Thursday as they travel to Greenville to take on the Hurricanes in the gym at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Greer.
