Sports Report for Monday, 1-6-2020

Local Notes:

CHS Red Devils: Last Friday night the Red Devils traveled down to White Knoll HS to take on the Class-5A Timberwolves.

  • Girls: CHS 31 – WKHS 28 in OT… The varsity girls’ game was a relatively low-scoring affair but when it was over the Red Devils had taken a 31-28 win over the Timberwolves but they had to go to overtime to do it… The Red Devils had small leads at the end of each of the first two quarters of play and led 19-14 going into the final 8 minutes of play… That is where the Timberwolves staged a comeback and outscored the Red Devils 13-8 hitting a three-point shot at the buzzer to tie the game 27-27 at the end of regulation… In the overtime neither team made a field goal and the Wolves only hit 1 of 4 free throws attempted while the Red Devils made 4 of 10 to take the win… Coach Gardner was quick to praise the defensive effort and rebounding of his team… The Red Devils were led in scoring by Tinique Austin who scored 8 points… Others scoring were Grayson Taylor 7 Taneal Evans 5, Payton Price-Walker 4, De’Shanti Watts 4 and Dana Kinard 3.
  • Boys: WKHS 86 – CHS 47… Now the news is not as good where the boys are concerned as the Red Devils ran into a pack of very hungry Timberwolves who defeated the Red Devils 88-47… The Wolves never scored less than 17 points in a quarter while the best quarter the Red Devils were only able to score 15 points… The big quarter for the Timberwolves was the third where they outscored the Red Devils 30-14… Coach Romines said that he was proud of the Red Devils playing hard as they have all season long even when behind but there were just too many turnovers by the Red Devils and the Timberwolves were good… The Timberwolves had 5 players scoring 10 points or more while the Red Devils had only Jadden Copeland scoring in double-digits with 15 points… Others scoring for the Red Devils were Wil Stewart with 7, Kimon Quarles 6, C.K. Vance 5, Konnor Richardson 5, Austin Copeland 3, Davis Wilson 3 and Justin Copeland 3… The Red Devils fall to 1-11on the season and will host Southside Christian tonight.

LDHS Raiders: The Laurens Raiders were at home last Friday night as they hosted the Bears of BHP.

  • Girls: LDHS 41 – BHP 39… In the first game of the night the Lady Raiders picked up their second win of the season as they defeated the Lady Bears 41-39 barley holding on to do so… The Raiders jumped out to a 15-4 lead after the first quarter of play and held on to that lead until the fourth quarter when the Bears chipped away and took the lead 32-31 with 6:13 left to play and the game went back and forth from that point on… With the game tied 39-39 27.9 seconds left to play Qua Fortson canned two free throws to give the Raiders the lead and they held on as the Bears could not get one of several shots to fall before the buzzer sounded… Fortson had a game-high 16 points for the Raiders… Lamoria Allen finished with 6 points, Aija Davis 5. CaDayzhia Grant 4, Raniya Jackson 2, Nadia Anderson 2 and Ashanti Conway 2… The Raiders are now 2-7 overall on the season.
  • Boys: LDHS 73 – BHP 50… The Raiders completed the sweep of the Bears by taking a 73-50 win in boys’ action…. The Raiders jumped out to a 15-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 31-21 lead at the half… The Raiders continued to outscore the Bears in the second half putting 25 points on the board in the final 8 minutes of play while holding the Bears to just 17 points… Dee Foster had a game-high 17 points scoring all but 2 of them in the second half… Also scoring in double-digits for the Raiders were Leonard Williams with 13 points, Josh Cureton 12 and Chase Jackson with 10… Dra Copeland finished with 7 points Nigil Owens 5, Preston Mahon 3, JQ Fair 2, Blake Nelson 2 and Isaiah Burnside 2… The Raiders improve to 4-8 on the season and will be back in action tomorrow as they hoist the Easley Green Wave in region action.

Raider Wrestling… The Raider wrestling team was in action this past Friday and Saturday as they participated in the Bearcat Invitational up in Rock Hill… Raider wrestlers who took at least one win on the mats were;

  • Josh Shubert (138) – 5 of 7 to finish 7th in his weight class
  • Myles Reppart (145) – 2 of 4
  • Robert Lawson (152) – 1 of 3 matches

Laurens Academy Crusaders: The Laurens Academy Crusaders get back into action tomorrow as they travel to Cambridge Academy to take on the Cougars.

  • Thursday, January 9th when the Gray Court-Owings Tigers host the Panthers of Hickory Tavern in a doubleheader of basketball action starting at 5:00 pm with the girl’s game.
  • Tuesday, January 21st when the Raiders host the TL Hanna Yellow Jackets in a double-header of varsity basketball action starting at 6:00 pm with the girls’ game.

Youth Basketball at the Laurens YMCA… Youth basketball registration is under way at the Laurens Family YMCA for youth 3-6… The cost is $40 and registration will close on January 12, 2020… You can register at the YMCA during normal operating hours and if you have any questions call them at 984-2621


Youth Baseball, Youth Softball and O-Zone Baseball Registration Open at the Clinton YMCA… Registration is now open at the Clinton YMCA for youth baseball and softball from ages 3 all the way to 11 years old… Registration will cost $50 for YMCA members while non-member registration is $65. A $10 discount will be provided for each additional child in the same family and Financial Assistance is available to families as well…. The deadline to register is Tuesday, February 11th and you can register at the Y during their normal business hours… For more information call the Y at 833-155 or see below:

  • Co-ed instructional baseball will be offered for youth ages 3-6 divided into at least 3 age groupings.
  • Baseball for youth 7-10 will be organized into 2 appropriate competitive divisions.
