Sports Report for Thursday, 1-9-2020

Local Notes: 

LDHS Raiders: he Raider sub-varsity teams hosted the Generals of Wade Hampton HS last night

  • JVG: WHHS 32 – LDHS 26… In JV girls’ action, the Generals took a hard fought 32-26 win over the Raiders. The Raiders led 5-3 at the end of the first quarter but the Generals outscored the Raiders 13-2 in the second quarter to take a 16-7 lead at the half… The Raiders came out in the third quarter and found their offense again as they 14 points on the board to take a 21-20 lead into the final 6 minutes of play… However the Raider offense cooled down the stretch while the Generals got hot as they outscored the Raider 12-5 to take the win… Amillion Evans had a game high 14 points to lead the Raiders in scoring… Kamryn George finished with 6 points, Osaviona Swindler 3, Wymaya Givens 2 and Samaurai McDowell-Williams 1.
  • Freshmen Boys: WHHS 40 – LDHS 39… In the second game featuring the freshman boys teams, the Raiders lost a heartbreaker as they fell to the Generals 40-39… The Generals led 15-13 after the first quarter bit the Raiders came back to take a 26-21 lead at the half… The Raiders still led 31-28 at the end of the third quarter but the Generals kept chipping away at the Raider lead and took the lead very late in the game… The Raiders just could not get the winning basket to fall as the Generals held on to take the win… The Raiders had 2 players score in double-digits as TyQua Johnson had a game-high 22 points and KD Mosley finished with 15… Jay Hunter scored the Raiders other 2 points.
  • JVB: WHHS 38 – LDHS 35… The Generals completed the sweep of the Raiders last night by taking a hard-fought 38-35 in the JV boys game… The Raiders led 10-9 at the half but the the Generals took a 21-18 lead into the final quarter of play… The Generals opened up their lead to as much as 6 points in the final quarter but the Raiders came back to cut it to 3 points with 30 seconds left to play but just could get no closer… The Raiders were led in scoring by Waldrick Burnside who finished with 13 points and was the only Raider in double-digits… Dylan Miller finished with 6, Travon Hunter 6, Van Butler 4, Dorian Gibson 3, Chris Graham 2 and Isaac Craig 1.
  • Raider Wrestlers at Home Tonight… The Raider wrestling team only has one home-date this season and that is tonight as they host Woodmont and Easley… Why don’t you come on out and cheer the Raider grapplers on starting at 6:00 pm.

 

  

Laurens Academy Crusaders: The Crusader basketball teams will be traveling down to Greenwood Christian tonight to take on the Hawks

 

Middle Schools:

Whitmire Wolverines at Hickory Tavern Panthers

  • G: WMS 36 – HT 26… In girls’ action, the Panthers’ offense struggled shooting a very low percentage from the field as they fell to the Wolverines 36-26…The Panthers trailed 21-11 at the half and had too many turnovers and missed shots in the second half to keep them from getting back in the game… Faith Jackson scored 20 of the Panthers 26 points and was the leading scorer in the game… Destiny Anderson, Emma Senerchia and Rebecca Simmons each scored 2 points for the Panthers.
  • B: WMS 41 – HT 36… In the final game at HT last night the Wolverines completed the sweep of the Panthers by taking a 41-36 win… The Panthers had a good first half as they carried a 22-18 lead into the locker room at the half… However the second half saw the Panthers have trouble with turnovers as their offense cooled while the Wolverines stayed hot as the Wolverines came back to take the win…. The Panthers had two players score in double-digits as Mason Aiken finished with 14 points and Tylon Fowler 10… Rounding out the scoring for the Panthers Maddox Holtzclaw finished with 6 points, Jaymon Jackson 4 and Jayvon Lindsey 2.

  • Thursday, January 9th when the Gray Court-Owings Tigers host the Panthers of Hickory Tavern in a doubleheader of basketball action starting at 5:00 pm with the girl’s game.
  • Tuesday, January 21st when the Raiders host the TL Hanna Yellow Jackets in a double-header of varsity basketball action starting at 6:00 pm with the girls’ game.

Youth Basketball at the Laurens YMCA… Youth basketball registration is under way at the Laurens Family YMCA for youth 3-6… The cost is $40 and registration will close on January 12, 2020… You can register at the YMCA during normal operating hours and if you have any questions call them at 984-2621

 

Youth Baseball, Youth Softball and O-Zone Baseball Registration Open at the Clinton YMCA… Registration is now open at the Clinton YMCA for youth baseball and softball from ages 3 all the way to 11 years old… Registration will cost $50 for YMCA members while non-member registration is $65. A $10 discount will be provided for each additional child in the same family and Financial Assistance is available to families as well…. The deadline to register is Tuesday, February 11th and you can register at the Y during their normal business hours… For more information call the Y at 833-155 or see below:

  • Co-ed instructional baseball will be offered for youth ages 3-6 divided into at least 3 age groupings.
  • Baseball for youth 7-10 will be organized into 2 appropriate competitive divisions.
  • Softball for young ladies 7-12 in 3 appropriate competitive age groupings will also be offered… For more information about youth softball, youth baseball or co-ed baseball (all mentioned above), click here.
  • O-Zone baseball is also offered for youth ages 11-12 years old and is more like high school baseball than any of the other age groupings mentioned above… For more information about O-Zone baseball click here.
