Sports Report for Wednesday, 1-15-2020

Local Notes:

CHS Red Devils: Last night the Red Devil varsity basketball teams traveled down to Prosperity, SC to take on the Mid-Carolina Rebels.

  • G: CHS 40 – MCHS 24… In girls’ action, the Red Devils once again relied on their defense to enable them to take a 40-24 win over the Lady Rebels… Clinton held the Rebels to just one point in the second quarter to take a 19-6 lead at the half and then went on to outscore the Rebels 21-18 in the second half to take the win… De’Shanti Watts scored 18 points to lead all scorers and Tinique Austin was also in double-digits with 13 points…. Also scoring for the Red Devils you have Payton-Price-Walker with 6 points and Taneal Evans with 3 points… The team is now 13-3 overall and 2-0 in region play.
  • B: MCHS 57 – CHS 54… Close but not close enough is a phrase you often hear and that described the boys’ game last night at Mid0Carolina as the Rebels took a hard fought 57-54 win over the Red Devils… At the end of each quarter there was no more than 3 points difference between the two teams with the Rebels slightly leading after each quarter of play… The score was 43-42 Rebels going into the last 8 minutes of play but the Red Devils just could not get over the hump to take the win… The Rebels’ Shelton Brooks led all scorers with 24 points and two other Rebels had 12 points each… Clinton was led in scoring by Jadden Copeland, who finished with 18 points, and Jordan Davis who scored 11… Both Kimon Quarles and Davis Wilson finished with 6 points while Konnor Richardson had 5, Austin Copeland 4, Wil Stewart 2, and Wilson Wages 2… The Red Devils fall to 1-15 overall and 0-2 in region play… The Red Devils will host Newberry this Friday night.

  

LDHS Raiders: The Raider varsity basketball teams traveled up to Woodmont HS last night in a pair of region games.

  • G: WHS 53 – LDHS 30… In the first game at Woodmont, the Wildcats took a 53-30 win as the lady Raiders continue to have trouble getting their offense moving at top speed… The Wildcats outscored the Raiders by at least 5 points in every quarter and went to the locker room at the half with a 25-12 lead and the Raiders really never threatened in the second half… Raniya Jackson was the only Raider in double-digits with 15 points… MK Moore finished with 5 points while CaDayzhia Grant, Nadia Anderson, Lamoria Allen and Ashanti Conway all finished with 2 points each… Asia Davis and Qua Fortson rounded out the Raider scoring with 1 point each… The lady Raiders are now 3-9 on the season and 1-4 in region play.
  • B: WHS 64 – LDHS 62… The Wildcats completed the sweep of the Raiders last night by taking a 64-62 win in varsity boys’ action that saw the Raiders comeback bid fall just short… The Wildcats carried a 34-25 lead into the locker room at the half but the determined Raiders came back out and by the time the third quarter was over the game was tied 43-43… The game went back and forth in the fourth quarter with Dee Foster hitting a three-point shot with about 15 seconds left to tie the game… The Wildcats came back down the floor and hit a jumper with 2 seconds left and then tipped a Raider full-court pass out of bounds as time expired to hold on and take the win… Dee Foster had a game-high 22 points to lead the Raiders in scoring while Dra Copeland finished with 13 points… The balance of the Raiders scoring came from Leonard Williams 6, Chase Jackson 6, Nigil Owens 5 and Preston Mahon 2… The Raiders fall to 5-10 on the season and 1-4 in region action. .. The varsity teams travel to Greenwood Friday night for more region action.

 

 Laurens Academy Crusaders:  The Laurens Academy Crusaders hosted the Greenville Hurricanes last night out at the LA gym on Highway 49.

  • G: LA 40 GH 32… In varsity girls’ action the Crusaders took a come from behind 40-32 win… The Hurricanes led 19-14 at the half but the Crusaders narrowed that to 24-22 Hurricanes going into the final 8 minutes of play… There the Crusaders outscored the Hurricanes 18-8 to take the win… The Crusaders were led in scoring by Regan Williamson who had a game-high 17 points & Blair Quarles who finished with 15 … Olivia Huck and Payton Breen both scored 4 points to round out the Crusaders scoring… The Crusaders are now 12-4 on the season.
  • B: LA 58 – GH 53… In another hard-fought game, the varsity boys’ team took a 58-53 win with the Crusaders holding off the Hurricanes in the fourth quarter to take the win…  The Crusaders led 32-20 at half and 42-31 going into the final 8 minutes of play.… In the fourth quarter the Hurricanes outscored the Crusaders 22-16 as the Crusaders hit some clutch free throws down the stretch to take the win…  Diamonte Grand had a game-high 24 points to lead the Crusaders with Caio Rita scoring 14 points and Luke Kerber 11 to give the Crusaders 3 players scoring in double-digits… Cal Robertson finished with 7 points and Clarence Bertoli to round out the Crusader scoring… Crusaders are now 9-8 on the season and will host Anderson Christian Thursday.

  • Thursday, January 16th when the Clinton MS Wildcats host the Yellow Jackets of Sanders MS in a doubleheader of basketball action starting at 5:00 pm with the girl’s game.
  • Tuesday, January 21st when the Raiders host the TL Hanna Yellow Jackets in a double-header of varsity basketball action starting at 6:00 pm with the girls’ game.

Little League Baseball (L3)… Registration is now open for L3 baseball at the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation headquarters The Ridge… L# will be for youth ages 7-12 and the cost will be $60…. There will be 3 age groupings which include Coaches Pitch, Minors and Majors… Registration is set to close on Saturday February 1… Register at The Ridge during normal business hours and if you want more information call them at 681-7275… You can also find more information on their website…. Tee Ball and Softball at the Laurens YMCA…. Registration is now open for Tee Ball and Softball at the Laurens Family YMCA… Tee Ball is for youth ages 3-6 and softball is for young ladies ages 7-9… The cost for either is $60 and registration will close March 1st… Stop by the YMCA to register during their normal business hours and if you have any questions call them at 984-2626

  

Youth Baseball, Youth Softball and O-Zone Baseball Registration Open at the Clinton YMCA… Registration is now open at the Clinton YMCA for youth baseball and softball from ages 3 all the way to 11 years old… Registration will cost $50 for YMCA members while non-member registration is $65. A $10 discount will be provided for each additional child in the same family and Financial Assistance is available to families as well…. The deadline to register is Tuesday, February 11th and you can register at the Y during their normal business hours… For more information call the Y at 833-155 or see below:

  • Co-ed instructional baseball will be offered for youth ages 3-6 divided into at least 3 age groupings.
  • Baseball for youth 7-10 will be organized into 2 appropriate competitive divisions.
  • Softball for young ladies 7-12 in 3 appropriate competitive age groupings will also be offered… For more information about youth softball, youth baseball or co-ed baseball (all mentioned above), click here.
  • O-Zone baseball is also offered for youth ages 11-12 years old and is more like high school baseball than any of the other age groupings mentioned above… For more information about O-Zone baseball click here.

 

Baseball / Softball 50 Inning Game… You need to go ahead and mark Saturday, February 8th on your calendar because that is when the Raider baseball and softball teams will be holding their Annual 50 Inning Coed Softball Game… This is a fundraiser that the teams have done for several years to help raise funds for items that the district’s athletic budget just can’t cover… I’ll have more details about this later but go ahead and mark your calendar now.
