Sports Report for Monday, 2-10-2020

Local Notes:

CHS Red Devils: Friday night the Red Devil varsity basketball teams hosted the Emerald Vikings making up games that had been postponed from Thursday.

  • G: CHS 51 – EHS 44… The Lady Red Devils continued their winning ways last Friday night despite as Coach John Gardner said not playing their best basketball especially in the first half… The Red Devils actually trailed 25-22 at the half but came out in the third quarter and outscored the Vikings 17-6 to take a 39-31 lead into the fourth quarter… The Vikings did try to rally and got as close as 4 points late in the game but the Red Devils held them off to take a 51-44 win… DeShanti Watts had a game-high 25 points to lead the Red Devils in scoring… Payton Price-Walker finished with 8 points, Tinique Austin 6, Grayson Taylor 6 and Taneal Evans 6… The win makes Clinton 8-1 in the region tied with Woodruff which defeated Clinton at Woodruff 42-28 earlier in the season… The two teams will meet tomorrow night at CHS with the region championship on the line. Go Big Red!
  • B: EHS 65 – CHS 42… In boy’s action the Red Devils were missing a couple of players and at time had to play with 5 freshmen on the floor… Despite this they still only trailed 25-19 at the half but in the second half the older and more experienced Vikings pulled away to take a 65-42 win over the Red Devils… Emerald pretty much controlled the boards the entire game as they were also taller than the Red Devils… Austin Copeland and Wil Stewart led the Red Devils in scoring with 9 points each… Wilson Wages finished with 6 points, James Anderson 5, Taliek Fuller 4, Kimon Quarles 3, CK Vance 3, Davis Wilson 2 and Jadden Copeland 1… The Red Devils are now 1-22 on the season and 0-9 in region play.

LDHS Raiders:

  • Basketball… Because the Greenville County schools were cancelled last Friday to weather related problems from all the rain on Thursday, the Woodmont at Laurens varsity basketball games were Saturday at 4:00 pm… Well Mother Nature had other ideas as the brief snow that took place just after noon again caused the Greenville County School District to stop any school related events on Saturday… The games are now rescheduled for Thursday night at LDHS… That means the Raiders will travel to TL Hanna on Tuesday, Easley on Wednesday and then host Woodmont on Thursday and Greenwood on Friday closing out their regular season.
  • Wrestling… The Raider wrestling team lost to Northwestern on Saturday in the first round of the Class-AAAAA Tournament… I hope to have more details on this tomorrow.

Laurens Academy Crusaders: The Laurens Academy Crusaders closed out their regular season last Friday on the road as they traveled down to Newberry Academy to take on the their arch-rivals the Newberry Academy Eagles.

  • G: LA 33 – NA 24…Earlier in the season the Eagles defeated the Crusaders in girls’ action at Laurens Academy… Last Friday night the Crusaders returned the favor by defeating the Eagles 33-24 on their home court… The Crusaders led 11-6 after the first 8 minutes 0f play and then held the Eagles to just 2 points in the second quarter while they scored 7 and then went on to take the win… Blair Quarles had a game-high 11 points to lead the Crusaders in scoring… Reagan Williamson scored 8 points, Payton Breen 7 and Olivia Huck 7 also… The Crusaders finished the regular season 16-7 overall and 6-3 in region play.
  • B: NA 37 – LA 16… The Crusader boys also lost to the Eagles earlier in the season but their quest for revenge fell short as they just could not get their offense going as the Eagles took a 37-16 win over the Crusaders… Newberry’s Payton Gardner led all scorers with 25 points while Cal Robertson led the Crusaders with 5 points… Diamonte Grant scored 3 points while Caio Rita, Andrew Codington, Clarence Bertoli and Luke Kerber each scored 2 points… The Crusaders finished the regular season 4-5 in the region and 11-14 overall… The region tournament begins tomorrow at Newberry Academy and I hope to have more details on it for you tomorrow morning,
