D-55 Trustee Resigns, Board Approves Superintendent Contract

A Contract was approved for a new School Superintendent and a school board member resigned, both during a Called Meeting of the Laurens County District 55 School Trustees last night.

School Trustee Mark Earle of Hickory Tavern resigned from Seat 4 on the board. The reason for his resignation was not discussed in open session, but the board voted to accept it.

District 55 Board Chair Robby Bell said a special election to fill Mr. Earle’s seat will be held April 28th. Should a run-off be needed, that would be on May 12th. Anyone interested in filling the seat should file with the Election Commission between February 28th and March 9th.

Following an executive session discussion last night to discuss a contract for the next District 55 Superintendent, Dr. Ameka Thomas, the District 55 School Board returned to open session and unanimously approved a three-year contract for Dr. Thomas with compensation of $142,000 per year.
