Daryl Smith Named LDHS Head Football Coach

On Tuesday, February 11, 2020, Laurens District High School (LDHS) named Daryl Smith head football coach of the Raiders. Smith was LDHS’s defensive coordinator during the 2019 season. He helped bring the Raiders a 2019 Region 1-AAAAA Championship and propelled them into the second round of the SCHSL playoffs. The Raiders finished the season with a 9-2 record. Smith is the ninth head coach in LDHS history.

Smith brings over 21 years of experience as a coach to the Raiders’ program. From 2002 to 2005, Smith served as the head football coach and athletic director at Barnwell High School. Smith is no stranger to LDHS as he served as the Raiders’ linebacker coach under former LDHS head football coach J.R. Boyd from 2005 to 2007. Before returning to LDHS in 2019, Smith was the linebacker coach and special teams coordinator for 11 years at Paul M. Dorman High School. During that time, Dorman High School the State Championships in 2009 and upper state champs in 2010,  2016, and 2018.

Smith received his Bachelor of Arts in elementary education from Furman University in 1996. He subsequently continued his education and earned a Master of Arts in history and education in 1998 and his Masters of Education in education administration in 2006.

Smith is currently a Driver’s Education teacher at LDHS. Smith believes that “football is a vehicle to teach our students about life. It allows us to teach them about adversity, competition, selflessness, and being a good citizen.”

Tommy Spires, LDHS Athletic Director said, “Coach Smith will do a great job of continuing to lead our football program forward. He brings successful experience with him from his past at other schools, but most of all, he is a high character guy who loves our kids, school, and community.

Smith said “I am very excited about getting this opportunity to lead these young men and can’t thank Dr. Peters, Mrs. Faulkner, and Coach Spires enough. I am looking forward to preparing for our next season and building this program in the years to come.”

LDHS will host a “Meet and Greet” for Coach Smith on Thursday. He will be in the commons area at the high school from 5:30 – 6:00 p.m. and then he will move to the atrium of the gym, where LDHS will be hosting Woodmont for a varsity basketball game, from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. LDHS invites the public to come meet the Coach at that time.
