Sports Report for Wednesday, 3-18-2020

Laurens Raiders:

  • Baseball: Brookland Cayce 12 – Laurens 0… The Raider varsity baseball team traveled down to the Columbia area last Saturday to take on the Brookland Cayce Bearcats… I hate to have to report that the news is not good for Raider fans as the Bearcats took a 12-0 win in 5 innings… The reason is clear in that the Bearcats outhit the Raiders 10 -2 plus the Raiders had 5 errors which helped the Bearcat cause… The big inning for the Bearcats was the bottom of the 4th where they put 8 runs on the board on just 3 hits 4 walks and a couple of errors… Zac Rice and Zach Faulkner had the Raiders only 2 hits… The Raiders have a 3-4 record and 1-1 in region play as they take a break due to the Covis-19 virus.

  • Raiders Retire Matt Holcombe’s Baseball Jersey… Laurens District High School (LDHS) baseball players and fans honored former player Matt Holcombe at their home opener last Friday night… Holcombe, who was a member of the 2014-2017 LDHS baseball teams, was fatally injured in a car accident in early February. Holcombe’s parents, Michael and Phyllis threw out the first pitch after the LDHS baseball program retires Holcombe’s number three (3) jersey.

Laurens Academy Crusaders:

  • Softball: Ware Shoals 11 – LA 4… Last Friday the Crusader softball team was able to get in their first game of the season before it had to be shut down…They traveled over to Ware Sholas to take on the Hornets… I hate to have to report that the Crusaders fell to the Hornets by a score of 11-4… As Coach Megan Huck noted they struggled offensively as they managed only 3 hits in the game… Emily Abercrombie had two of them (both singles) and Blair Quarles also singled… Eighth grader Olivia Huck and Sophomore Emily Abercrombie on the mound, each going 3 innings… She also pointed out that the team played well defensively against the power hitting Hornets… The Crusaders were very aggressive on the bases taking advantage of walks and stolen bases to help manufacture their runs.
