Sports Report for Monday, 3-23-2020

COVID-19 Virus Related:

  • The Laurens Family YMCA which is part of the Lakelands Region YMCA announced last Friday has temporarily suspended use of it facility for all programs and its members… The Child Development Center WILL continue to serve infants– 4K at First Baptist Church…It is their intent to re-open the facilities on April 6th… They will continue to engage members through our social media outlets and offer some online options for those needing to do exercise at home….   • Laurens County Sports Hall of Fame Postpones Induction Ceremony… On Friday the Laurens County Sports Hall of Fame announced it was changing the date of this year’s induction ceremony… Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Laurens County Sports Hall of Fame is going to postpone the 2020 induction banquet, originally scheduled for April 30, to a later date in 2020… As soon as they get announce a new date we will be sure to pass it on.
  • PGA… Late last week the PGA modified their schedule due to The Virus… The earlies they plan to try to bring golf the back is May 21st at the earliest according to the PGA schedule on their website… Click here to go to their schedule page… Two events during that time frame the Masters (April 9-12) and the PGA Championship (May 14-17) are marked as postponed but no make-up date announced at this time.

Local Notes: Last week I recapped the spring sports season for CHS and Laurens Academy… This week I plan on doing the same for the spring sports at LDHS.

Laurens Raiders:

  • Golf… To the best of my knowledge the raider boys’ golf team was only able to get in one match as they hosted Greenwood at Lakeside CC back on March 10th… Just to remind you that the raiders lost that match 170-206… Scores for Laurens were Collin Harlan 43, Jason Rogers 54, Ben Orcutt 54, and Cameron Colley 55.
  • Tennis… On the same date the Raider boys’ tennis team played its only match that was reported… The Raiders traveled up to Greenville to take on the Generals of Wade Hampton HS… I doubt the ride back was very pleasant as the Raiders lost 7-0… For more details on this match click here.

  • Dorman Finishes Second in Nation… In case you missed it, the Dorman Cavalier boys’ basketball team finished second in the nation according to MaxPreps… Montverde Academy out of Montverde, Fla. finished #1 with a perfect 25-0 record… Dorman finished the season 30-1 winning the SCHSL Class-AAAAA title… Their only loss was to Oak Hill Academy out of Mouth of Wilson, Va. 63-52 in a tournament back in December of this past season… Oak Hill Academy finished ranked #6 in the nation according to MaxPreps with a 37-3 record… For more on this, click here.

Golf for Kids… The Laurens YMCA and PRTC will be holding their 16th Annual Golf Tournament on Saturday, March 28, 2020 out at Lakeside Country Club… The monies raised at this tournament will benefit the Scholarship Program at the YMCA… The scholarships are designed to support those unable to participate because of financial difficulties… In 2019 the Y awarded more than $52,000 in financial assistance… For more information about the tournament, click here to see the tournament brochure… If you still have questions contact Brian Harland at 984-2626 or email him at brian@lakelandsymca.org… Make plans to come out for some great golf with your friends and support a very worthy cause.

Youth Soccer at the Laurens Family YMCA… Registration is now open for youth soccer at the Laurens Family YMCA… It is open for youth ages 3-12 and the cost is $50 for members and $60 for nonmembers… Registration will close on April 5th… If you have questions contact them at 984-2626.

Girls Volleyball at The Ridge… Registration for girls’ volleyball is now open through April 10th through the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Department… This is for young ladies ages 7-14 and the cost is only $60… You can register daily at their headquarter The Ridge on Exchange Drive and if you have any questions call them at 682-7175… NOTE… Due to the Covis-19 virus, The Ridge is closed until further notice and registration has been put on hold. :
