Sports Repport for Tuesday, 3-24-2020

PC Notes: For more information about any of the PC games or topics below, click on the score or title at the beginning…. A quick recap of two of PC winter sports this past season.

  • Men’s Basketball… The PC men’s basketball finished their season with a 10-22 record when they lost to Charleston Southern in the first round of the Big South Tournament down in North Charleston… The tournament was won by Winthrop back on March 8th when they defeated Hampton 86-68… Winthrop would have had the automatic spot in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
  • Women’s Basketball… Unlike the men, the Lady Blue Hose basketball team was not able to completely finish their season before college sports were suspended and then cancelled due to “The Virus”… They had defeated Longwood 82-73 in first round action of the Big South Tournament… They were scheduled to go to Campbell for a second round when “The Virus” caused all athletics to be suspended and then canceled… The finished the season with a 12-18 record.

COVID-19 Virus Related:

  • Laurens YMCA Postpones Golf For Kids… Yesterday the management at the Laurens Family YMCA decided to postpone the Golf for Kids Tournament which was scheduled to take place this Saturday out at Lakeside CC… As you may recall this is a major fundraiser for the Y that helps to provide monies for scholarships given to those youth who wish to participate in Y programs but are having financial difficulties… The tournament is now scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 30th… If you have questions contact Brian Harland at 984-2626 or email him at
  • Raider Alumni Game… The Raider alumni game which was scheduled to take place Saturday, April 3rd has been postponed at this time… If the high school spring sports are allowed to resume at a later date an attempt will be made to reschedule the game.
  • 2020 Olympics… Canada announced yesterday that it will not be sending athletes to the 2020 Summer Olympics in Japan if they go on as scheduled for July 24 – August 9 this year… They join Australia which has already said the same thing… Many teams are having their training and preparation disrupted by “The Virus” and feel they would not be fully prepared in addition to the fact they feel like it would be Insafe for their athletes as they mingle with other athletes from around the world… There is a loud chorus of other countries (in the USA) who are urging the IOC to delay the summer Olympics… In a statement Sunday on the official Olympic website it stated that the IOC “will step up its scenario-planning for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020”… It pointed out that it would be difficult to postpone for several reasons but that the only option not under consideration was cancelation… To read that statement, click here.

  • Boys Soccer… The Raider boys soccer team is 2-4 overall and 0-3 in region play at “the break” … Their two wins came against Ninety Six (9-0) and Dixie (3-2)… To see their schedule and how they did against other foes,click here.
  • Girls Soccer… The girls’ soccer team has the same record as the boys (2-4 / 0-3) at “the break”… Their wins also came against Ninety Six (2-1) and Dixie (3-2)… If you would like to see their schedule and how they did against other opponents, click here.

Golf for Kids… The Laurens YMCA and PRTC will be holding their 16th Annual Golf Tournament on Saturday, May 30, 2020 out at Lakeside Country Club… The monies raised at this tournament will benefit the Scholarship Program at the YMCA… The scholarships are designed to support those unable to participate because of financial difficulties… In 2019 the Y awarded more than $52,000 in financial assistance… For more information about the tournament, click here to see the tournament brochure… If you still have questions contact Brian Harland at 984-2626 or email him at… Make plans to come out for some great golf with your friends and support a very worthy cause.


Raider Baseball Alumni Weekend and GameImportant Note: This event has been postponed as of 3-24-20 and attempts will be made to reschedule if the high school sports season is allowed to resume before the end of school… Mark your calendar for Friday, April 3 and Saturday, April 4 because that is when the Laurens Raider baseball team will be honoring the 1990 State Championship before the varsity game with Woodmont on Friday about 6:30 pm and then on Saturday will be holding Annual Alumni Game on Saturday at 11:00 am at Ed Prescott Field… All former varsity baseball players between the years of 1980 to 2017 are invited to take part in the alumni game… Registration to participate is required by March 16th and the registration fee is $35 and that includes a shirt and hat… There is a registration form you are required to fill out and to get to that form and submit it, click here… There will be a lot of fun and fellowship that day so if you are a former Raider player please consider joining them… If not make plans to come out and enjoy watching them see if they can “recapture some of their former glory.”
