COVID-19 Virus Related:

  • Schools Closed Through April… By now I am reasonably certain that almost everyone has heard that due to the continued continuing effort to check the spread of the COVID-19 virus and protect the citizens of SC, Governor McMaster is extending school closure in South Carolina to include the entire month of April… I think I heard a lot of school age children celebrating yesterday and parents hitting the floor about the time that came out on the news yesterday… Click here to see the text of statement… Now the question arises what does that do to the possibility of salvaging at least some of the spring high school sports?.. Well first let me tell you that SCHSL offices are closed until April 1st and may stay closed longer and as of last night there was nothing on their website about this after the governor extended the closure… The Executive Committee could meet by teleconference to discuss but my gut feeling is that will not happen until late next week… When they do get around to it I am now afraid they are going to follow what the NCAA and colleges have done and that is to simply say let’s call it a season and pack up all the gear until next year… I really hate that for the seniors who were looking forward to their final season! I hope I am wrong.
  • 2020 Summer Olympics Postponed… Yesterday the IOC announced that it was postponing the 2020 Summer Olympics in Japan due to the growing spread of the COVID-19 virus across the globe and the fact that more nations were strongly advising them to postpone or they would not be sending athletes if held on schedule… The consensus now is the Olympics will not be held this calendar year but most likely about the same time as originally scheduled next year… It’s a complicated “mess / jigsaw puzzle” to do this… To read more about this on the Olympic website, click here.

College Notes:

  • Dawn Staley Picks Up Post-season Awards… The University of South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley is the head coach of the USA Olympic Women’s Basketball Team and the announcement will really affect her summer…. Not to worry though as she will be busy picking up some trophies this summer… As you may recall the gamecocks finished the season with a 32-1 record including 26 consecutive wins, the SEC Regular-Season Championship and the SEC Tournament Championship… The Gamecocks are ranked #1 in the AP and USA Today/WBCA Coaches Polls… Because of this she has been named the Women’s basketball Coaches Association and AP Coach of the Year for Women’s Basketball…. To learn more about these two awards and Coach Staley click here and click here…. All of this comes on top of her winning the SEC Coach of the Year Award…. Note to Ray Tanner and USC Trustees: Pay the woman whatever she asks for!
  • Boston, Harris Earn USBWA All-America Honors… Now two of her players this season picked up dome post season awards… Freshman Aliyah Boston and senior Tyasha Harris earned spots on the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) All-America Second and Third Teams, respectively…. For more information on this and why they were picked, click here.
  • Harris Wins Dawn Staley Award… Now Coach Staley has an award named after her… The Dawn Staley Award is presented by The Phoenix Club of Philadelphia to the player who exemplifies the skills that Staley possessed throughout her career (high school, collegiate, professional and Olympic) – ball handling, scoring, ability to distribute the basketball and the will to win…. This year’s award goes to the Gamecocks senior Tyasha Harris… Now if you click here it will take you to a posting that tells you not only more about the award and why she won it but also comments from Coach Staley and Ms. Harris.

Yesterday’s Sports Trivia Question(s) and Answer(s):
