COVID-19 Virus Related:

  • SCHSL Suspends High School Sports Through April… Yesterday I said that the Executive Committee of the SCHSL is not scheduled to meet again until April 2 by teleconference to discuss among other things the spring sports schedule… Well that is still true but yesterday SCHSL Commissioner Jerome Singleton issued a statement stating that in part that in order to comply with Governor McMaster’s Executive Order the suspension of all athletic events including practices, workouts, tryouts, conditioning and weight training as well as open season skill development activities must be suspended… Like I said yesterday, does not look good for resuming spring sports this year.

Pros:

  • MLBIn an Interview yesterday on ESPN MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred told Scott Van Pelt that MLB will be back as part of the recovery from the COVID-19 virus… He gave no specific time table for coming back other than “hoping the teams can start preparing for the season sometime in May and that the league will work with infectious disease experts before determining the exact date”… He says that nothing is off the table and that they are talking with the players union about relaxing some of the rules that govern scheduling… One thing mentioned was increasing the number of double headers and making them 7-inning games… For more information on this from ESPN click here.
  • Panthers… For those of you that may not have heard the Carolina Panther released quarterback Cam Newton back on Tuesday… Newton was the #1 overall draft selection back in 2011 and holds most every franchise passing record for the Panthers … As Panther fans know he has had a lot of injury problems the last few seasons… For more on this click here… The Panthers have made a couple of moves to fill the void left in Newton’s departure… First they resigned Kyle Allen who started 12 games for the injured Newton last season… He was set to become a free agent before the signing… For more on this click here… The Panthers have also signed Teddy Bridgewater who was with the Saints and backed up Drew Brees and playing starting 5 games when Brees was injured…. For more on Bridgewater’s signing click here… And finally the Panthers signed P.J. Walker to a 2 year contract… He comes to the Panthers from the Houston Roughnecks an XFL team… He was an undrafted free agent out of Temple who served time on the Colts practice squad before going to the XFL… For more on him click here.

  • Tom Brady Signs with Buccaneers… As the true NFL fans know by now, 42 year old quarterback Tom Brady formerly of the New England Patriots has signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers… The two-year deal is worth a reported $50 million guaranteed along with another $9 million in incentives… Wow… Fr more on this, click here… I hope his former New England Patriot fans don’t feel too “deflated”… LOL
