Sports Report for Friday, 3-27-2020

PC Notes: Continuing with our recap of the shortened spring sports season at PC

  • Baseball… Coach Elton Pollock and the baseball team were not off to the best start this season as the team was off to a 2-14 start with all the games being nonconference game… Their schedule included some tough teams lake Notre Dame, University of South Carolina, Clemson and Wofford which was off to a fast start… To see their schedule and results click here
  • Softball… Now the news is better where the PC softball team is concerned as Coach David Wilson and his squad had a 16-8 record all against non-conference opponents when the season was canceled… If you would like to see their schedule and results click here.

 

High School Basketball Notes

  • Dorman Finishes Second in Nation… In case you missed it, the Dorman Cavalier boys’ basketball team finished second in the nation according to MaxPreps… Montverde Academy out of Montverde, Fla. finished #1 with a perfect 25-0 record… Dorman finished the season 30-1 winning the SCHSL Class-AAAAA title for the fourth straight time… Their only loss was to Oak Hill Academy out of Mouth of Wilson, Va. 63-52 in a tournament back in December of this past season… Oak Hill Academy finished ranked #6 in the nation according to MaxPreps with a 37-3 record… For more on this, click here.
  • P.J. Hall Named Gatorade Plyer of the Year… One of the main reasons that the Cavaliers did so well this past season is because of their senior P.J. Hall who yesterday it was announced had won the Gatorade SC Player of the Year Award… He averaged 14.9 points per game shooting 54 percent from the field and averaging 8.3 rebounds per game… He is a Clemson commit… For more on this award and comments not only from P.J.   • Three Area Coaching Changes …. First earlier this week it was announced that Clay Breazeale will take over the boys basketball coaching duties at JL Mann HS… He comes from Greenville tech Charter and will replace Mike Morrison who was suspended during the season following an altercation with another coach after their game at Wade Hampton.. Morrison has strong ties to Laurens… Second Emerald HS has hired John-Mark Scruggs to be their new boys’ basketball coach after mark Sorrow stepped down after 8 years as the Vikings coach… Scruggs comes to Emerald from Ninety Six where he graduated back in 1991 and has been their athletic director since 2017 and boys’ basketball coach for 6 years… By the way Scruggs is the second new coach hired by Emerald recently as they hired Tad Dubose from Abbeville HS as their new football coach earlier this year… For more on this click here.

Golf for Kids… The Laurens YMCA and PRTC will be holding their 16th Annual Golf Tournament on Saturday, May, 30, 2020 out at Lakeside Country Club… The monies raised at this tournament will benefit the Scholarship Program at the YMCA… The scholarships are designed to support those unable to participate because of financial difficulties… In 2019 the Y awarded more than $52,000 in financial assistance… For more information about the tournament, click here to see the tournament brochure… If you still have questions contact Brian Harland at 984-2626 or email him at brian@lakelandsymca.org… Make plans to come out for some great golf with your friends and support a very worthy cause.
