Senior SalutesI As of this date I have not received information from CHS- track and baseball coaches and the LDHS– boys’ and girls’ soccer coaches as well as the track coaches.


COVID-19 Related:

  • Furman Discontinues Baseball and Men’s Lacrosse… In case you missed it on the news last night, yesterday Furman University announced several actions it was taking due to the financial impact COVID-19 pandemic including the discontinuation of baseball and men’s lacrosse starting next school year… Baseball is one of the oldest sports at Furman dating back to 1896 while men’s lacrosse is one of the newest… According to reports these two sports had been under the microscope as Furman was looking at its long-term planning but the financial impact hastened the decision… The school will honor scholarships to the student-athletes if they choose to stay at Furman and will aid them if they choose to transfer… Under NCAA rules any player transferring to another school is immediately eligible to play when a school they are coming from discontinues their sport… The dropping of these two sports is estimated to save Furman five million dollars… Now to be honest what some of the TV stations did not report is that in the same announcement Furman announced other cost cutting measures that include cutting salaries of senior administrators including the president, furloughs and other budget reducing measures… To read the entire press release from Furman on all of click here… Don’t be surprised if you here of this happening at other institutions of higher learning before this is all over.

Pro Sports

  • Xfinity Races Tonight… Now for you casual NASCAR fans or sports fans in general who are starved for live action even with “no fans in the stands”, a quick reminder that the Xfinity Series will get back to action tonight as they invade the Darlington track… The Toyota 200 is scheduled to have the green flag drop just after 6:00 pm and it can be seen on FS1.

Local YMCAs Open with Restrictions… The Clinton and Laurens YMCAs have now reopened with restrictions and changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic with the safety of their members and staff in mind.

  • Clinton YMCA… The Clinton Family YMCA opened Monday, 5-18-2020 under what they refer to as Phase 1 Guidelines and Restrictions… First the Y’s hour are now Monday-Friday 7am to 7 pm, Saturday 7am to 6 pm and closed on Sunday… The list of restrictions and guidelines are quite long but a few of them require social distancing (6 feet minimum), use of one entrance only where all will have their temperature checked, class sizes limited to 10, gym for walking only (no basketball), time limits on some equipment and many other items including but not limited to more frequent cleaning and sanitizing… To see the entire list of guidelines and restrictions click here.
  • Laurens YMCA… The Laurens YMCA (which is part of the Lakelands Region YMCA) also changed it operating hour … They will be open Monday-Friday from 5 am to 7pm, Saturday 8 am to 4 pm and will be closed on Sunday… They also have a list of restrictions and guidelines similar to the Clinton YMCA during Phase 1 of their reopening… To see that list and other important information click here.

 

City of Laurens Parks and Recreation NOT Reopened Yet… WLBG contacted Jason Pridgen the Director of the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Department and he stated that they are not yet… He said the situation is “very fluid and it could change daily”… If I find out that they are open I will pass that information on to you.

 


This & That:

Golf for Kids… The Laurens YMCA and PRTC will be holding their 16th Annual Golf Tournament on Saturday, May, 30, 2020 out at Lakeside Country Club… The monies raised at this tournament will benefit the Scholarship Program at the YMCA… The scholarships are designed to support those unable to participate because of financial difficulties… In 2019 the Y awarded more than $52,000 in financial assistance… For more information about the tournament, click here to see the tournament brochure… If you still have questions contact Brian Harland at 984-2626 or email him at brian@lakelandsymca.org… Make plans to come out for some great golf with your friends and support a very worthy cause.

Rhythm on the Rails… The City of Clinton’s first Rhythm on the Rails event of this season originally scheduled for May 15-16 has fallen victim to the COVID-19 pandemic and has been rescheduled for June 19-20… In addition to the usual entertainment, vendors and rides it will also include Smokein’ on the Rails a BBQ cooking contest….
