  • Xfinity Race to Run Thursday… An old nemesis of NASCAR won last night as Mother Nature and all the rain caused the Xfinity Series Toyota 200 race scheduled for last night at Darlington to be postponed until tomorrow at noon… The sport is called NASCAR not NASBOAT you know… If you would like to see the starting lineup for the race tomorrow click here.

Laurens County Speedway Last Saturday the Laurens County Speedway opened its season much like NASCAR has done with its restart of the season in that there were no “fans in the stands”… The “Darlington of the Dirt” hosted the drivers who love to do it just for the sport and fun of it… Below is a summary listing the winner of each divisions of the main … To see a more “in depth accounting of each of the main events click here.

  • Thunder Bombers… The veteran Tinker Roberts held off Troy Bagwell to take the win
  • 602 Crate… Colby Cannon took the checkered flag here.
  • 4-Cylinder… The familiar face of Rod Tucker raced into victory lane.
  • Front Wheel Drive… Travis Jamieson started the 2020 season with a win here.
  • Limited Late Model… Deano Long led start to finish in the division’s main event.

COVID-19 Related:

  • Voluntary Pay Cuts at USC… Yesterday when I told you that as a cost cutting measure at Furman University the baseball and men’s lacrosse teams were being done away with and that senior administrators and some coaches were getting pay cuts and other measures were being taken to help lessen the impact of the COVID-19 financial impact on the university, I told you to expect more of this… well yesterday the University of South Carolina announced that President Bob Caslen, Athletic Director ray tanner and coaches Will Muschamp, Frank Martin and Dawn Staley had all agreed to reduced salaries this next school year… The projected savings from this are $1.2 million… They also announced other cost cutting measures such as delaying capital construction projects, deferring non-critical maintenance and filling only mission-critical positions and numerous other things in the academic and sports areas of the universities operation… For more information on this (including what these administrators and coaches are now expected to make this nest season) click here… Now I read somewhere that Clemson is doing some cost cutting in similar ways but have not heard anything about any of the coaches taking pay cuts voluntarily or otherwise… Come on Clemson coaches, step up to the plate and do the right thing… Heck you could cover any shortfall at Clemson if Dabo Swinney took a 10% cut… He can afford it! (LOL).

Local YMCAs Open with Restrictions… The Clinton and Laurens YMCAs have now reopened with restrictions and changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic with the safety of their members and staff in mind.

  • Clinton YMCA… The Clinton Family YMCA opened Monday, 5-18-2020 under what they refer to as Phase 1 Guidelines and Restrictions… First the Y’s hour are now Monday-Friday 7am to 7 pm, Saturday 7am to 6 pm and closed on Sunday… The list of restrictions and guidelines are quite long but a few of them require social distancing (6 feet minimum), use of one entrance only where all will have their temperature checked, class sizes limited to 10, gym for walking only (no basketball), time limits on some equipment and many other items including but not limited to more frequent cleaning and sanitizing… To see the entire list of guidelines and restrictions click here.
  • Laurens YMCA… The Laurens YMCA (which is part of the Lakelands Region YMCA) also changed it operating hour … They will be open Monday-Friday from 5 am to 7pm, Saturday 8 am to 4 pm and will be closed on Sunday… They also have a list of restrictions and guidelines similar to the Clinton YMCA during Phase 1 of their reopening… To see that list and other important information click here.

City of Laurens Parks and Recreation NOT Reopened Yet… WLBG contacted Jason Pridgen the Director of the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Department and he stated that they are not yet… He said the situation is “very fluid and it could change daily”… If I find out that they are open I will pass that information on to you.
