Sports Report for Friday, 5-22-2020

Local Notes:

Raiders Hold Signing Day… When student-athletes are able to continue their education and sports careers at institutions of higher learning signing day is a major event we like to cover here at WLBG… However as you know the COVID-19 pandemic forced schools to close, sports to cease and social distancing practices made it impossible to hold the signing ceremonies as has been done in the past… AD Tommy Spires and the administration did find a way to give the seniors who were signing their letters of intent a way do this and as he put it “one last opportunity to stand in front of the diamond L.”… They brought eight (8) senior and their families in at different times and then made a short video where the student-athletes talked about their choice of school, what the plan on majoring in and other things much like we have done here in the past on WLBG… They then edited their individual videos in to video which you can see if you click here… My congratulations not only to the student-athletes involved but to Coach Spires and the administration for doing this… The student-athletes who participated in the signings are:

  • Andrea Choice– Track, Columbia College
  • Blakely Hall– Cheerleading, Anderson University
  • Brielle Macatiag– Volleyball, Columbia International University
  • Lauren Madden– Cheerleading, Anderson University
  • Nigil Owens– Basketball, Erskine College
  • Aidan Pridgen– Baseball, USC Lancaster

Laurens Academy:

  • Updated Sports Awards at Laurens Academy… Earlier this week I brought you some information about sports awards for this year at Laurens Academy… At that time all I had were the names of winners on the varsity teams… Since that time I have been able to obtain the names of the winners for middle school sports awards… I have now updated the list of award winners to include the middle school winners and if you click here, it will open up a list of the varsity winners on the first page and if you scroll down to the second page you will find the middle school winners… Congratulations to one and all! Go Crusaders!

  • Chase Briscoe Wins Toyota 200… In case you missed it yesterday, Chase Briscoe won the Toyota 200 Xfinity race at Darlington Yesterday… He and Kyle Busch bumped and banged each other the final 10 laps with Briscoe holding on for the win which was a bright spot in a tough week for him and his wife… Earlier they announced that they had lost a baby they were expecting later this year… For more on this story and the race click here… If you do it will carry you to the NASCAR posting about the race and there will be links there for official race results and an emotional interview with Briscoe.
  • Racing Sunday at Charlotte… A quick reminder that the Cup Series takes center stage this Sunday as they hold the Coca-Cola 600 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway again with “no fans in the stands”… The green flag drops close to 6:00 pm and it can be seen on FS1.
  • NASCAR TV Schedule for the Week… To see the NASCAR broadcast schedule for this week click here.
