Sports Report for Wednesday, 5-27-2020

Local Notes: 

Laurens County Speedway… The Laurens County Speedway (LCS) was able to hold its normal Saturday night card of events last Saturday night and the bested NASCAR in that for the first time this racing season they opened the gates for fans to watch…. To see a detailed accounting of each main event as provided by Will Richard, click here… A quick recap of each main event is as follows:

  • Thunder Bombers… Casey Lawson took the win in the Thunder Bomber leading from start to finish… A lot of caution in the race kept the drivers close but he was able to hold off Reid Neadehiser who finished second.
  • 602 Crates… Colt Smith picked up his first win of the season in the 602 Crates… Shun “Oreo” Thomas earns a tough second place finish, followed by Colby Cannon in third.
  • MMSA 4-Cylinder… Travis Mosely held off Matt Gilbert for a $1,200 pay day in the Monster Mini Stock Association Four Cylinder main event…. This too was a caution filled race that had its last restart with 10 laps to go.
  • Limited… Tony Quarles had the pole in the Limited main event and used it dominate the race until late in the race Dale Timms was able track him down and get past for the win with Quarles finishing second.
  • Front Wheel Drive… And finally in the Front wheel Drive Jason Lambert took his first win of the season beating out the previously undefeated this season Travis Jamieson by 0.244 seconds… Heck according to my wife that’s how long it takes me to fall asleep if I go horizontal on the couch.

NASCAR

  • Chase Elliott Wins Gander Truck Series race and Collects a Bounty… In case you missed it, last night up at Charlotte Chase Elliott took the win in the NC Education Lotter 200 Gander Truck Series race… It was the first time since 2017 that he had driven a truck in the series… Now Kyle Busch finished second and he had a bounty on his head… Busch had won the last 7 truck series races and there was a $100,00 bounty for any full-time NASCAR Cup Series driver who could beat him… Now for more on this race click here and when you get there you will find another link to entire order of finish for the race.
  • Cup Series Races Again Tonight… Now there is one more race at Charlotte this week and it is tonight as they run the Alsco Uniform 500 starting at 8 pm… Again it will be available on all the usual NASCAR TV outlets including FS1,
  • Cup Series Driver Standings… Now for those of you who like to keep up with the driver standings in the Cup Series, Kevin Harvick leads the field with 291 points… The next two drivers are Joey Logano (268) and Alex Bowman (266)… If you would like to see the entire list of driver standings, click here.

Local YMCAs Open with RestrictionsThe Clinton and Laurens YMCAs have now reopened with restrictions and changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic with the safety of their members and staff in mind.

  • Clinton YMCA… The Clinton Family YMCA opened Monday, 5-18-2020 under what they refer to as Phase 1 Guidelines and Restrictions… First the Y’s hour are now Monday-Friday 7am to 7 pm, Saturday 7am to 6 pm and closed on Sunday… The list of restrictions and guidelines are quite long but a few of them require social distancing (6 feet minimum), use of one entrance only where all will have their temperature checked, class sizes limited to 10, gym for walking only (no basketball), time limits on some equipment and many other items including but not limited to more frequent cleaning and sanitizing… To see the entire list of guidelines and restrictions click here.
  • Laurens YMCA… The Laurens YMCA (which is part of the Lakelands Region YMCA) also changed it operating hour … They will be open Monday-Friday from 5 am to 7pm, Saturday 8 am to 4 pm and will be closed on Sunday… They also have a list of restrictions and guidelines similar to the Clinton YMCA during Phase 1 of their reopening… To see that list and other important information click here.

 

City of Laurens Parks and Recreation NOT Reopened Yet… WLBG contacted Jason Pridgen the Director of the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Department and he stated that they are not yet… He said the situation is “very fluid and it could change daily”… If I find out that they are open I will pass that information on to you.

 


This & That:

Golf for Kids… On Monday 5-25-20 I was informed by Brian Harlan that the Annual Golf for Kids Golf Tournament scheduled for Saturday, May, 30, 2020 at Lakeside Country Club has been postponed… At this time no makeup date has been scheduled but if I hear of the date I’ll be sure to pass it along to you… For any questions concerning this Brian Harland at 984-2626 or email him at brian@lakelandsymca.org.

Rhythm on the Rails… The City of Clinton’s first Rhythm on the Rails event of this season originally scheduled for May 15-16 has fallen victim to the COVID-19 pandemic and has been rescheduled for June 19-20… In addition to the usual entertainment, vendors and rides it will also include Smokein’ on the Rails a BBQ cooking contest….
