A peaceful protest was reported yesterday afternoon in Laurens on the day funeral services for George Floyd were being held in Minneapolis. Laurens Mayor Nathan Senn noted that the protesters included local people along with Black Lives Matters groups from Greenville and Greenwood as they conducted a demonstration in downtown Laurens beginning at 4:00 pm. The Mayor stated Laurens City Government and all law enforcement present were committed to ensuring the constitutional rights of the protesters were protected and that the people and property in the City of Laurens were also protected.

Laurens Chief of Police Chrissie Coefield Latimore indicated that protecting these rights was a concerted effort between the Laurens Police Department, Laurens County Sheriff’s Office, Clinton Police, SLED, DNR, the Highway Patrol, Laurens County EMS, the Laurens City Fire Department and Laurens County Emergency Management. Chief Latimore also thanked the citizens of Laurens and visitors to town for their cooperation.
