Gunfire As Suspect Flees Arrest

Melissa Ann Miller

Gunfire from a suspect fleeing a traffic stop on foot late yesterday morning resulted in a heavy law enforcement presence in the Highway 101 / Hellams Road area west of Gray Court. A man was arrested at the scene but a woman with previous warrants for her arrest escaped on foot, reportedly firing at deputies over her shoulder as she fled toward a wooded area. There were no injuries noted from the gunfire. The woman reportedly discarded the firearm and it was recovered by deputies.

A helicopter was used for a time yesterday searching for the woman, but she eluded arrest for hours.

Arrested at the scene of the traffic stop was 43-year-old Tommy Michael McClain of J. R. Ashley Road, Iva. He was being held by Laurens County earlier today, pending warrants.

Arrested later last evening was 38-year-old Melissa Ann Miller of Welcome Drive, Fountain Inn. She was initially served with a Violation of Probation warrant, stating she had violated her probation by being in possession of a handgun during a traffic stop from the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office. She was also served with two Bench Warrants staging she was convicted January 3rd, 2019 for Driving under Suspension and a Motor Vehicle Fee Violation.

There are also reported to be multiple warrants for her arrest, at least some were believed to be from Fountain Inn Police.

Tommy Michael McClain and Ann Melissa were expected to be served with charges from the Sheriff’s Office following Thursday’s incident.
