Sports Report for Tuesday, 7-28-2020

College Notes:

PC Football Schedule Reduced… The COVID 19 virus continues to play havoc with the PC football schedule this fall… As you may recall I told you a couple of weeks back that the PC game at Johnson C. Smith on September 12th had been canceled due to their conference cancelling all fall sports because of the virus… Monday afternoon PC announced other schedule changes made for the same reason by other athletic conferences… Five other schools have now cancelled their games with PC and all 6 cancellations are listed below… Two of the six total games were road trips and four of them home games….As the schedule now stands PC will not open play until Saturday, Sept 26th when they travel to Gardner-Webb and the only home game left of the revised schedule at this time is Saturday October 24th when they host Erskine… The announcement also said “The fluidity and unpredictability within college athletics being caused by the ongoing nationwide pandemic makes it difficult to predict what the 2020 football season may hold. Further scheduling updates will be provided when it becomes possible to do so”… Personally I take that to mean two things… One there could be more cancellations and two they may be able to pick up a couple of games…. We shall see…To see the current update PC football schedule click here… The games to date that have been cancelled are:

– at Morehead State (September 3rd)
– at Johnson C. Smith (September 12th)
– UVA-Wise (September 19th)
– Stetson (October 3rd)
– Merrimack (November 14th)
– UVA-Lynchburg (November 21st)

Pro Sports:

Braves… For more information on the game(s) below, click on the score at the beginning.

  • Rays 14 – Braves 5… the Braves traveled down to Tampa Bay last night for the first of two games there and lets just put it this way, the Rays bats had the pop and the Braves bats did not as the Rays took a 14-5 win over the Braves… The Braves starter Mike Foltynewicz’s fast ball just did not have the zing it had last season as the Rays hit three of them into the stands and scores 6 runs in only 3 .1 innings pitched and then the Braves bullpen could not hold them back… The Braves did manage two home runs themselves one by Dansby Swanson who has started the season off with a bang and the other by Matt Adams… The Braves are now 2-2 on the season while Tampa Bay improves to 3-1… The teams will play again in Tampa Bay again tonight and then the teams will come to Atlanta tomorrow for two more games in the two days.

  • MLB Season Could Be in Jeopardy Already… In case you missed it on the news last night, MLB postponed two games scheduled for last night and I’ll give you one guess as to why – the COVID-19 virus… It seems that at least 14 players and staff members of the Miami Marlins tested positive for the virus after finishing their series with Philadelphia in Philly this past weekend… That prompted the postponement last night of the Orioles at the Marlins game and the Yankees at Philadelphia game last night… MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred must decide whether to delay the 2020 season, postpone it until further notice or simply hope the Miami Marlins’ outbreak is an isolated case… As of early this morning when I was wrapping up this report there was no further word from MLB… Watch the news today for the latest… By the way, USA Today has a nice article on this and to see it click here.
  • MLB Schedule… To see the scores from yesterday around MLB and the games today click here….Once you get there you have several options to see the scores of past games and the schedule past today.

  • Training Camps Start This Week… The NFL teams will start their training camps this week with many of them starting today… Of course as I reported several weeks ago, the NFL has mandated that training camps are to be held in the team’s home city at their in-season practice facilities… That means no Panthers in Spartanburg… NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has written a letter to NFL fans about the upcoming season… If you would like to read this letter click here to go to the NFL posting of it and some comments about it.
