Sports Report for Wednesday, 7-29-2020

Local Notes:

CHS Red Devils:

  • Booster Club Applications Available… There is a posting now on the CHS Athletic website concerning the CHS Booster Club… In these days of COVID-19 and the possibility of reduced revenues to high school and middle school athletics caused by the pandemic, school athletic budgets will be most likely strained and the help and support of booster clubs will become even more important… To that end the CHS Booster Club invites you to join them this season… If you click here it will carry you to the CHS Athletic website where there is another link to the booster club application… Please think about helping them to make “Go Big Red” a reality.

Pro Sports:

Braves… For more information on the game(s) below, click on the score at the beginning.

  • Rays 5 – Braves 2… A disastrous third inning proved to be the undoing for the Braves last night down in St. Pete as the Tampa Bay Rays scored 5 runs in that inning and then went on to take a 5-2 win over the Braves… Four singles, 3 walks and a wild pitch (all but 1 walk after two outs) led to the Rays 5 runs… The Rays only outhit the Braves 7-6 but they were able to get their hits in a much more timely fashion than the Braves… The two teams will get together again tonight but it will be in Atlanta for the Braves home-opener of the season.

  • Marlins Idle Until Next Monday… The number of players and staff members who have tested positive for the “Virus” is now up to 17 and that prompted MLB not only to postpone last night’s game but also the remainder of the Marlins games through at least Sunday… Also the remainder of the Phillies and Yankees series (the Phillies were the last team to play the Marlins last weekend) has also been postponed… As a result of the postponements in the Yankees schedule the Yankees and Orioles will get together tonight and tomorrow night to allow for some flexibility in scheduling later in the season… For more on this click here to go to the MLB website where there is a posting about this… Most of the “experts” think the Marlins most likely picked up the “virus’ in Miami and some teams have said they don’t want to travel to travel to Miami… The Washington Nationals as a team have voted not to travel to Miami (click here for more information on this)… The question now arises that if more teams feel the same way will the Marlins have to find a new home field for the season?   For more on this story in USA Today click here and here for two articles about it.
  • MLB Schedule… To see the scores from yesterday around MLB and the games today click here….Once you get there you have several options to see the scores of past games and the schedule past today.

  • Training Camps Start This Week… The NFL teams will start their training camps this week if they have not done so already… Of course as I reported several weeks ago, the NFL has mandated that training camps are to be held in the team’s home city at their in-season practice facilities… That means no Panthers in Spartanburg… NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has written a letter to NFL fans about the upcoming season… If you would like to read this letter click here to go to the NFL posting of it and some comments about it.
  • Players Opting Out of Season… As you may have heard on some of the radio and TV media lately, several NFL players are opting to sit out this season because of the COVIS-19 pandemic… They all have their reason from elderly parents they help care for, spouses who are at high risk due to health problems, wife expecting to give birth in the next few months to thy just don’t want to take the risk… Well USA Today has a posting that is supposed to keep up with the players who have opted-out of the season by team… If you would like to see this posting click here.
