Sports Report for Friday, 7-31-2020

College Notes:

  • SEC Dashes Hope for Clemson vs. South Carolina Football Game… About 24 hours after the ACC announced a 10+1 plan (10 conference games and 1 non-conference game) the SEC announced a 10 game conference only schedule for the upcoming football season thus putting a dagger in the heart of all Tiger and Gamecock fans as kills any chance of a Clemson-Carolina (Palmetto Bowl) game this season… The SEC football season will not start until September 26th and will end in time for the SEC Championship Game to be played in Atlanta on December 19th…  The conference is still putting together the schedule which will be released soon… For more on this story click here to go to the SEC website where the announcement is posted.
  • University of South Carolina’s Reaction… Obviously the University of South Carolina has to support the plan but they don’t have to like all parts of the plan especially the absence of any non-conference games (specifically Clemson vs. South Carolina)… If you click here it will carry you to the Gamecock website where the news is posted and it also has comments from President Bob Caslen, AD Ray Tanner and Coach Will Muschamp… It also has information about reduced seating at Williams Brice and ticket information because of that…. By the way even Clemson AD Dan Radakovich had a less than happy reaction to this… He is quoted as saying “Clemson aggressively lobbied the ACC to include an additional non-conference game for the primary purpose of maintaining our long-standing rivalry game with South Carolina. We’re disappointed to hear of the scheduling decision announced by the SEC, as we know the importance of The Palmetto Bowl to the State of South Carolina. We will work to fill the opening on our schedule immediately.”

Pro Sports:

Braves… For more information on the game(s) below, click on the score at the beginning.

  • Braves 2 Rays 1… The Braves and the Rays completed their 4 game series (the first two were in St. Petersburg) last night with a 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays… Braves starter Max Fried looked sharp last night as he went 6⅓ innings of 3 hit baseball walking just 1 while striking out 7 but did give up the 1 earned run… The Rays actually outhit the Braves 6-3 but the Braves hits were well timed and they also had some key sacrifice flies… The Braves defense was also outstanding and I have seen no better catch this season than the one Adam Duvall made in left field in the top of the 9th inning… If you click on the link provided by clicking on the score at the start you will find a video of that catch… The Braves will host the Mets in a four-game series starting in Atlanta tonight.
