Sports Report for Thursday, 8-6-2020

Local Notes:

SCHSL

SCHSL Pushes Back Football Season… On yesterday’s sports report I mentioned that the Executive Committee of the SCHSL would be meeting and that one of the things they would be looking at was the fall sports season calendar… I also speculated that it was expected that the football season might be pushed back to a later starting date than planned… Well that turns out to be just what happened… Instead of starting play on September 11th play will now start on September 25th… The first practice date was also moved back to September 8th and first scrimmage date to September 12th… The state finals will now be held the weekend of December 4th and 5th… Other changes concerning football coming out of the meeting are:

  • Schools can start wearing helmets August 17th in Phase 1.5
  • Helmets and shoulder pads September 8th
  • Full pads September 10th
  • Varsity teams will be allowed only 2 scrimmages one of which can be replaced by a jamboree
  • Teams who do not make the playoffs will still be allowed 1 added game but it must be played no later than week 2 of the playoff schedule and only a maximum of 7 additional practices will be allowed for this extra game.

Other Fall Sports Have Changes… Now other fall sports have also had their calendars changed as to when they can start practices, scrimmages and competition… If you would like to see a table released by the SCHSL that shows this information for all the fall sports click here.

More Information… Also yesterday the SCHSL released a 24 page document titled “Best Practices – Return to Play for fall 2020” that has everything mentioned above in it plus a lot of sport specific and general information in it… If you would like to read that document click here… If you take the time to read through it shows the SCHSL staff has been putting a lot of thought into what they stated yesterday was their main goal in all of this – Keeping the student athletes as safe as possible.

Note about Clinton and Laurens Football Schedules… Late yesterday afternoon I reached out to the athletic directors at both Clinton and Laurens High School concerning whether they would simply move back the existing football schedule 2 weeks or completely redo it… Coach Alexander is yet to respond to me but I am sure he will soon… Coach Tommy Spires did respond and said that the Raider schedule is simply pushed back two weeks… That means that Laurens will travel to Greenwood to open their season and region schedule on September 25th…. Oh yes one more thing about all of this – I would not bet my house that all this comes to pass as is now planned…LOL
