Sports Report for Friday, 8-7-2020

Local Notes:

CHS Red Devils:

  • Booster Club Applications Available… There is a posting now on the CHS Athletic website concerning the CHS Booster Club… In these days of COVID-19 and the possibility of reduced revenues to high school and middle school athletics caused by the pandemic, school athletic budgets will be most likely strained and the help and support of booster clubs will become even more important… To that end the CHS Booster Club invites you to join them this season… If you click here it will carry you to the CHS Athletic website where there is another link to the booster club application… Please think about helping them to make “Go Big Red” a reality.
  • Football Schedule Moves back 2 weeks… Yesterday I mentioned that the SCHSL had “pushed back” by 2 weeks the start of competition from September 11th to September 25th and that Laurens had simply pushed back the start of their season by 2 weeks with the Raiders opening with the Greenwood Eagles in Greenwood on the 25th… I have since learned that the Clinton Red Devils have also simply “pushed back” the start of their season schedule as it existed to September 25th when they open at Union County taking on the Yellow Jackets.

Pro Sports:

Braves… For more information on the game(s) below, click on the score at the beginning.

  • Braves 4 – Blue Jays 3… Last night the Braves finished their 3-game series with the Blue Jays taking a 4-3 win on the strength of 2 big homers… Freddie Freeman had a 2-run homer to put the Braves up early but by the time the bottom of the ninth inning rolled around the Blue Jays had tied the game 3-3… In the bottom of the ninth inning with 1 out, Nick Markakis hit the first pitch he saw into the right field bleachers almost to the Chop Shop Restaurant there…The lefty hit a ball that was about 1.5 feet of the ground and launched it there… OK the Braves won on a walk-off homer by Markakis… Well the back story on this is that Markakis originally said he would opt out of this season due to the COVID-19 pandemic but has a change of heart… He applied for reinstatement with MLB and had it approved… He did not see live pitching until July 29th at a Braves alternate training site…He did not join the team until earlier this week and had only pinched hit a couple of times before he got his first start last night… Nice start for his season, hope he keeps it up…. The Braves win the series with the Blue Jays 2-1 and are now 9-5 on the season… They hit the road traveling to Philadelphia for a 4-game series with the Phillies starting at 7:05 pm.
