Local Notes:

CHS Red Devils:

  • Booster Club Applications Available… There is a posting now on the CHS Athletic website concerning the CHS Booster Club… In these days of COVID-19 and the possibility of reduced revenues to high school and middle school athletics caused by the pandemic, school athletic budgets will be most likely strained and the help and support of booster clubs will become even more important… To that end the CHS Booster Club invites you to join them this season… If you click here it will carry you to the CHS Athletic website where there is another link to the booster club application… Please think about helping them to make “Go Big Red” a reality.

College Notes:

  • South Carolina Now Knows Football Opponents… Last Friday the SEC notified its member schools who their football opponents will be this fall if they are able to play football… As you may recall I reported to you a few days ago that the SEC announced that their schools would play a 10-game conference only schedule this fall… The two schools that were added to the eight conference games the Gamecocks already had on their schedule are Auburn and Ole Miss… The Gamecocks 2020 home schedule now consists of games against Auburn, Georgia, Missouri, Tennessee and Texas A&M… The Gamecocks will travel to Florida, Kentucky, LSU, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt… Now as of late yesterday the SEC had no9t announced the date of each of these games much less the starting time… Those are all yet to be announced… For more on this click here to go to the Gamecock website and click here to go to the SEC website where the additional games were announced.

  • Mid-American Conference Cancels Fall Sports… Also last Friday the MAC became the first FBS conference to cancel all sports… Previously there were some FCS conferences that have done that… In the announcement not only player safety was cited in the COVID-19 world we now live in but also financial losses that are as a result of not being able to play non-conference contest against Power Five opponents who are playing conference games only… The cancellation affects men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s soccer, women’s soccer and women’s volleyball…. Now for more on this click here to go to the MAC website announcement…The conference’s 12 members are Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Kent State, Miami, Northern Illinois, Ohio and Toledo.

  • First College Coaches Poll Out… One last item from late last week, the USA Today Sports College Football Coaches poll came out for the first time for the 2020 season… Clemson fans were happy to see it as the coaches have the Tigers ranked #1 with Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia and defending national champion LSU filling out the balance of the top five in that order… For more on this and top see the top 25 schools according to the coaches click here… Now if we only get to play to see how close to correct they are.

Pro Sports:

Braves… For more information on the game(s) below, click on the score at the beginning.

  • Phillies 13 – Braves 8… Last night up in Philadelphia the Phillies scored 10 runs in the first two innings and then went on to take a 13-8 win over the Braves…  Braves starter Sean Newcomb only lasted 1⅓ innings giving up 8 earned runs on 6 hits two of which were homers…  His relief Robbie Erlin didn’t do much better as he only went 2⅔ innings giving up 4 earned runs on 4 hits with 3 of those hits being homers giving the Phillies a total of 5 homeruns on the night… The Braves trailed 13-1 going into the top of the 9th inning and to their credit they did try to come back scoring 7 runs in that inning but it was just too little too late… Travis d’Arnaud had a homer for the Braves in the top of the 2nd inning and both Johan Camargo and Austin Riley had homers in the top of the 9th inning… The Braves and the Phillies spit the 4-game series 2-2 and the Braves move to the Big Apple tonight to start a short 2-game series with the Yankees.
