Local Notes: 

Laurens Academy Crusaders:

  • Varsity Volleyball… Last night the Crusader varsity volleyball team hosted the Falcons of Fountain Inn Christian… Good news for Crusader fans as the Crusaders won 3-0… Set scored were 25-9, 25-10 and 25-15… The team is now 5-2 on the season and 3-0 in region play… They return to action tomorrow when they host the Cambridge Academy Cougars in a middle school varsity doubleheader starting at 5:00 pm.

North/South All-Star Football Game Cancelled… In case you missed it, last Sunday it was announced that due to the public health concerns about the COVID-19 virus, the 2020 Touchstone Energy Coop North/South All-Star Football Game scheduled to be played on December 12, 2020 at Dough Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach has been cancelled… As did the Shrine Bowl, they felt that it was just not safe for the student athletes at this time… The press release about this did not say if they would announce those athletes who would have been selected for the event like the Shrine Bowl plans to do… The next North/South All-Star Game is now scheduled for December 10, 2021… If you would like to see the notice on their website, click here.

Braves… For more information on the game(s) below, click on the score at the beginning.

  • Marlins 8 – Braves 0… Last night the Marlins rookie pitcher Sixto Sanchez proved to be too much for the Braves as he went 6 scoreless innings striking out 6 with his fastball breaking the 100 mph mark on several occasions… He and 3 other Marlin pitchers held the Braves to just 4 hits on the night while the Marlins pounded out 13 hits to take an 8-0 win over the Braves… Freddie Freeman did get 2 of the Braves 4 hits with one of them being a double…. The Braves will try to avoid being swept by the Marlins tonight as they play the final game of their 3-game series… It is the last game of the current home stand as the Braves hit the road tomorrow and will not return to Atlanta until Sept. 21st when they again will face off with the Marlins.

    • Cup Series… Sunday night Kevin Harvick took the win in the Southern 500 holding off Austin Dillon who finished second… This was his eighth win of the season but more importantly it was a win in the first round of the playoffs… Joey Logano, Erik Jones and William Byron rounded out the top five. Alex Bowman, Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch, Aric Almirola and Clint Bowyer completed the top 10. Jones was the only non-playoff driver among the first 10 finishers….     • Xfinity Series… In the Xfinity Series race on Saturday, Brandon Jones took the win thus securing himself a spot in the 12-man playoff field for the Xfinity Series… For more information on this race click here.

  • Booster Club Applications Available… There is a posting now on the CHS Athletic website concerning the CHS Booster Club… In these days of COVID-19 and the possibility of reduced revenues to high school and middle school athletics caused by the pandemic, school athletic budgets will be most likely strained and the help and support of booster clubs will become even more important… To that end the CHS Booster Club invites you to join them this season… If you click here it will carry you to the CHS Athletic website where there is another link to the booster club application… Please think about helping them to make “Go Big Red” a reality.

 

  • Fall Baseball… The City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Department is now accepting registrations for fall baseball for youth ages 6-11… Divisions will include Coaches Pitch, Minors Kids Pitch and Majors Kids Pitch…  Age and ability will be the deciding factor for division placement… The cost is $40 and you can register your child at The Ridge daily between the hours of 9:00 am and 5:00 pm… There will be a skills evaluation on Sept. 14 and practices will start on the 15th… For more information please call them at 681-7275 of email them at LaurensPRD@yahoo.comRegistration will close on September 11th.
