Sports Report for Friday, 9-11-2020

Local Notes:

Football Scrimmages Tomorrow… One sure sign that we are edging ever closer to kicking off the football season is when the teams start holding scrimmages against other teams… Well that is happening tomorrow morning at both CHS and LDHS… Tomorrow at 10:00 the Red Devils and Blacksburg HS will go at each other in Wilder Stadium while at the same time the Laurens Raiders and the Chapin Eagles tangle at KC Hanna Stadium…Now I have to figure out how in the world can I be at 2 places at the same time?… Come on out and take a first look at your favorite team tomorrow morning.

 Laurens Raiders:

  • Volleyball… The raider volleyball teams hosted the Greenville HS Red raiders last night in a JV/varsity doubleheader.
    • Varsity: Greenville 3 – Laurens 1… In varsity action last night the good Raider stook an early lead taking a 25-19 win over Greenville… However the Red Raider rebounded taking the next set 12-25 and the third set 19-25… Greenville also took an early lead in set 4 but the Raiders attempted to come back and did get the score down to 24-22 Greenville before got the point they needed to make it 25-22 giving them the match… The raiders are now 1-1 on the season.
    • JV: Greenville 2 – Laurens 0… In action prior to the varsity match, Greenville also won by a score of 2-0… Set scores 13-25 and 12-25… The JV squad is 0-2 on the season.

Laurens Academy Crusaders:

  • MS Football: Cougars 28 – Crusaders 8…  Last night at Todd Kirk Field the Laurens Academy Crusader middle school football team opened their season under new head coach Brian Kneece at the helm… I wish I had better news but I have to report that the Cougars spoiled his debut as the Cougars took a 28-8 win spoiling his debut… The Crusaders scored late in the game to avoid the shutout.
  • Volleyball Postponed… The Crusader volleyball teams were supposed to play Cambridge at home last night but those matches were postponed and when / they are rescheduled I’ll let you know.
  • Crusaders Host Clarendon Hall Tonight… A quick reminder that the Crusader varsity football team will host the Clarendon Hall Saints tonight at 7:30 at Todd Kirk Field and I hope you can make it out to cheer on the Crusaders but if you can’t we plan on bringing you that game live here on Real radio WLBG starting at 7:00 pm… Go Crusaders!!

College Notes:

  • Clemson Kicksoff Season Tomorrow… Just a friendly reminder that the college football season in the State of South Carolina kickoffs tomorrow at 7:30 pm when the Clemson Tigers travel to Wake Forest to take on the Demon Deacons with no fans in the stands… That game can be seen on ABC… Go Tigers!

  • Braves 7 – Nationals 6… The Braves started their series with the Washington Nationals on a positive note last night up in DC as they took a come from behind 7-6 win… The Braves trailed 5-0 going into the top of the fourth inning where Freddie Freeman hit a 2-run homer to cut into the Nationals lead… In the top of the fifth inning it was Ronald Acuna Jr.’s turn to hit a 2-run homer to cut the Nationals lead to just 1… The Nationals then scored a run in the bottom of the inning to make the score 6-4… In the top of the seventh inning Freeman tied the game with another 2-run homer… The Braves scored the winning run in the top of the eighth inning when Dansby Swanson homered and then the Braves relief pitcher managed to hold the Nationals scoreless the rest of the way

  • Panthers and Falcons at Home Sunday… Just a quick reminder for the Panther and Falcons fans out there that they will both open their seasons Sunday at 1:00 pm at home… The Panthers will host the Los Vegas Raiders and the game can be seen on CBS and the Falcons will host the Seahawks and that game can be seen on FOX

  • Booster Club Applications Available… There is a posting now on the CHS Athletic website concerning the CHS Booster Club… In these days of COVID-19 and the possibility of reduced revenues to high school and middle school athletics caused by the pandemic, school athletic budgets will be most likely strained and the help and support of booster clubs will become even more important… To that end the CHS Booster Club invites you to join them this season… If you click here it will carry you to the CHS Athletic website where there is another link to the booster club application… Please think about helping them to make “Go Big Red” a reality.


  • Fall Baseball… The City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Department is now accepting registrations for fall baseball for youth ages 6-11… Divisions will include Coaches Pitch, Minors Kids Pitch and Majors Kids Pitch…  Age and ability will be the deciding factor for division placement… The cost is $40 and you can register your child at The Ridge daily between the hours of 9:00 am and 5:00 pm… There will be a skills evaluation on Sept. 14 and practices will start on the 15th… For more information please call them at 681-7275 of email them at LaurensPRD@yahoo.comRegistration will close on September 11th.
